Army and Navy Hope End to Draft Through Pay Increases
The Army and Navy seek to end peacetime conscription by boosting pay and stepping up recruiting. Congress extended the draft to March 31, 1947 but wants voluntary service to suffice. Pay increases of 10 to 50 percent aim to draw volunteers. July and August are draft holidays. Selective Service projects limited intake, with 9,000 monthly from 19 year olds and small numbers from older brackets. Army already has 800,000 volunteers and targets 1,070,000 troops by July 1, 1947.
