A Greene County couple boast of the season's early produce. The husband tends tomato plants and declares a large green tomato will be the first in town, highlighting local gardening rivalry as summer begins.
Hard news style item reports the soft coal wage deadlock may be broken with new offers from operators and a possible pension fund change. It notes UMW President John L. Lewis seeking a recess to prepare a position report for the policy committee, and a court injunction on him being lifted as the pension plan is deemed legal.
An ice cream social is set for Friday night at 7 00 on the Mt. Mariah church lawn north of Buckton. Proceeds benefit the church treasury and the public is invited to attend.
All members were requested to meet at the home of Miss Nola Db Yoder Thursday at one o clock to discuss business of importance.
Mrs. Lyda Jane Workman aged 45 of Newberry died at Freeman-Greene county hospital after a short illness. A restaurant operator, she moved to Newberry in 1941 and is survived by husband Ray, two daughters, a sister Ada Jenkins of Iowa, three brothers and a granddaughter. Funeral services are set for 2 PM Thursday at Newberry Methodist Church with Rev. Grady Sutton, burial in Prairie Chapel Cemetery.
Mrs. Joan McNew of Linton gave birth to a girl this morning named Linda Lee weighing 5 pounds 7 ounces. An 8 pound 1 ounce boy was born today to Mrs. Betty Speirs of Worthington. Mrs. Nelle Lewis of Bloomfield was admitted for major surgery. Miss Juanita Michaels of Solsbury was taken home today. Mrs. Mandy Bingham of Solsbury was released today.
Washington reports Administration stalwarts condemn the Republican platform as masking congressional failures. Brannan accuses the farm plank of collapse, noting $70 million in farm program cuts and $30 million short for local production credit. Critics also cite a $6 million reduction in agricultural research funding.
An explosion ripped through the Raylass department store in Winchester Virginia today collapsing ceilings and blowing out windows. About 20 people were hospitalized as rescuers searched debris with several believed trapped. Police said gas may have caused the blast.
Ruth Jolliff on her cross complaint was granted a divorce from Everett Jolliff in Greene circuit court at Bloomfield. A separate complaint on note against Elmo Shields by Robbins Motors Sales awarded $345.50 to Glessie Robbins.
A Nebraska Iowa tornado last night killed 31 year old Harry Badberg of Talmadge and injured several others. The storm damaged farm buildings snapped lines and uprooted trees. Five or more injuries were reported and a Missouri Pacific freight train was derailed near here with four crew injured. The tornado traveled from southeastern Nebraska into Iowa along a 60 mile path before dissipating near Emerson.
The Linton Municipal Waterworks sank test well No. 5 to 60 feet and found ten feet of water producing gravel. Engineers doubt this will yield a sufficient supply as gravel depth is too shallow. The water table near the plant has fallen about ten feet in ten years. The hole was drilled on the Pryor Alred farm half a mile south of the pumping station. .Further drilling options are expected.
The Linton City School Board met at the high school and took no action on whether children may enter first grade next fall. The rule requires six years old by September 1. Absent members Paul P. Fry and John C. Cravens were out of town, leaving a partial quorum.
Gerald Turpen 24 of Dugger faces charge of failure to stop after a stop sign as his tractor trailer struck a Brazil Waterworks truck at Jackson and Alabama streets. Clem C. Bell 70, a Brazil City employee, died from a fractured skull. Ed Liddill and Cliff Strain were hospitalized but not seriously hurt. Turpen and his wife were uninjured. coroner’s inquest set for Thursday. Bell had worked for Brazil City six years and is survived by a large family.
Western military governors in the U S Britain and France announce currency reform in their Berlin sectors in response to a Soviet move to impose a new currency on all of Berlin. They delivered a letter to Marshal Sokolovsky after denying Soviet jurisdiction over their zones.
Linton fans watched two close softball games at High School park. Ketner of Terre Haute Vishing canceled tonight’s game, Allen Flower Shop ten to play Sullivan Kraft Cheese on Wednesday. In the opener Pleasantville led 5-4 after five, but Allen scored six in the seventh to win 6-11. The nightcap ended 10-8 as Greater Linton edged Dugger in a ninth inning rally.
Martha Washington White Shrine No. 24 will hold a meeting at 7 o clock Friday evening in Washington Indiana. All lite members were urged to attend.
Leonard Eugene Wallace four of Linton rural route suffered minor cuts and bruises after darting between parked autos and into a car driven by Mrs Kenneth Foulks Greene County nurse. Police said blame not determined and cleared the nurse of fault. He received treatment at a local physician’s office.

Rosenblum Max Stryk and Jacob Weiss for allegedly profiting nearly 575000 from wartime black market whiskey in 1943. Weiss once Indiana Senate pro tem. witnesses describe handling cash by the basket and large cash payments to Rosenblum for whiskey.
Washington reports enlistments by draft age youths push the national guard above the 341,000 quota as officials plan to reach 375,000 before Truman signs the draft bill. They will continue recruiting and seek a deficiency appropriation when Congress reconvenes. Youths joining before signing remain exempt from 21 months active service.
