Vacation limit adopted by miners
Soft coal miners will limit their vacation to four days in 1945, down from ten days in the agreement signed May 29 with the government and United Mine Workers of America. The four days run July 4 to July 7, with production aims higher for essential needs. The modification was signed by Vice Admiral Ben Moreell and UMWA president John L Lewis. District No. 11 reports four-day shutdowns with skeleton maintenance crews.

Bread shortage seen easing after worst stage
Flour millers hope the bread shortage has peaked as bakeries stay open nationwide and sugar shortages outpace flour. Officials say Congress price controls, wheat supply from the new crop, and livestock feed cuts will shape relief, with many small bakeries already shutting for vacations or limited runs.
