Adjutant Gertrude Calvert of the Salvation Army is promoted to Major as of June 16 1937 in recognition of faithful service. She has served in Linton since November and previously worked there for several years.

A surprise birthday party was given for Miss J. Ann Marty of West Linton by friends. Games and contests filled the evening and refreshment were served to guests including Margaret Ann, Mary Esther, Betty Jo, Johnny Mack Morrison, Hele Louise Morrison, Delores Mads Combs, Hubert Dennis Hudson, Ed and Betty Sue Marty, Leonar Tavern, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hudson, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Combs, Mr. and Mrs Alphonse Pinide, Mrs. Yvonn Leroux, and Je Aun Marty.
The 4 H club girls under Miss Norma Jean Smith met at the high school on Tuesday for a regular meeting. Members performed tap dance readings piano solos and songs. A picnic is planned for Tuesday at City Park from 9 20 a m to 4 p m with members urged to attend and bring lunch. The group will meet at Miss Smith or Norma Jean Strong’s home for transportation.
Marco 4 H girls at Mareo held a regular meeting in Marco high school. Miss Norma Jan Lucas and Miss Helen Shake were elected leaders. Miss Belen Shake named reporter with Doris Beck and Qoal Medlock as yell leaders.
Mrs Lillian Powell president of the W F P M S of the First church today announced the annual tea will be held at the home of Mr and Mrs Herbert Priest at 299 Fifth Abel Southeast Thursday evening June 24. These are busy days for the Seabars of the W P M S says Mrs Powell. Various committees are hard at work.
Mrs. S. C. Roeder leaves the city for Turkey Run with her grandson Robert Berns to visit daughter Opal Alward. Mrs. Alward will join her to Peru for a few days. Roeder then intends to go to Monroe Michigan to visit another daughter Mrs. Thomas A. Stone.
Italy has started laying up large stores of Australian wheat. Canberra reports on the move dated June 18 with U.P. dispatches noting the strategic grain buildup by Italy.

Mrs. Joanna Sexton 73 a well known Greene county resident died at 12 15 a m at the home of her son Wayne Wakefield near Switz City of a heart attack. She lived over 50 years in the home and was active in the Switz City Church of Christ. Surviving are six sons Jack Wakefield Sam Wakefield Wayne Wakefield Jerry Wakefield Markham Wakefield and daughter Mrs Diqua Stevenson. Newkirk Funeral home Pleasantville is in charge with date and service details pending.
Indianapolis June 18 U P charges of violation of the National Labor Relations Act have been filed by R Poland Evansville district director for the CIO against S W Swift and Sons Packing Co and the George L Mesker Steel Corp of Evansville Robert Cowdrill district National Labor Relations board representative announced today The companies are charged under two Wagner act sections The Swift Co allegedly interfered with employees right to organize and is charged with aiding a company union The Mesker Co is charged with interfering with union organization and discriminating against employees attempting to organize Poland alleged Mesker fired employees who signed with the union.
A state conservation department truck delivered eight tanks of baby largemouth bass from Rochester Indiana to Linton this afternoon. The fish, about one and a half inches long, were placed in the Haseman stripper pond north of the city to bolster local fish populations.
A crowd of about 300 attended the Sandborn Lions charter ceremony at the Sandborn high school auditorium. Charter members and officers were introduced as Dr. A. A. Spears and J. F. Flint spoke on Lions aims and the charter was presented. The evening included songs, dancing, and a banquet with Bedwell’s orchestra.
The Linton Miners will host Worthington Sunday at the Linton City Park diamond with a revamped lineup and hopes for a sturdy showing. WPA recreation league action also features Jasonville at Linton Merchants, Lyons versus Midland at Midland field, while Swift City rests.

Headquarters and pay office will be in Linton with storage in a concrete building at First and A streets. Payroll for unskilled labor is estimated at 1000 to 1500 dollars weekly. Work likely starts in Switz City where the principal substation will be placed. The American Legion issues neutrality guidance for members acting as deputies in labor disturbances.
District game wardens and Indiana State Department of Conservation officials rescued game fish from a strip-mine lake two miles south of Linton at the bend of a state road. The stock transferred to other waters after mining operations would have stranded them. the number found was not as large as expected.

Amelia Earhart, the American woman who is attempting a around the world flight, returned to Akyab Burma after a Calcutta departure. Weather forced a direct Bangkok leg to be scrapped and she landed at Akyab before attempting Bangkok again.
Terre Haute Indiana June 18 UP state conciliators Max Schaffer and A Sweeney rushed efforts to avert violence amid a 400 member New York Central railroad construction strike. Workers claim 33 cents an hour for ten hours with 3% deduction seek higher wages and shorter hours. Union charter sought from CIO. Fred Craig presides, William Harkness secretary. Frank Barnhart backs charter through CIO.
Lawrence Staggs will be sentenced to 90 days in Indiana State prison for leaving the scene of an accident and driving without a license. He was the driver of a truck that collided with a car driven by Paul Bock of Chicago, injuring none seriously. The truck had only one light and belonged to his brother in law.
Nationalist forces bombarded the west bank of the Nervion river outside Bilbao on June 18, isolating thousands of loyalist soldiers. The barrage stretched from Bilbao to the sea with heavy shells, air bombs, mortars, and big gun fire along the retreat route including the Santander highway.
