Death, deceit, and a newspaper hoax in a miser’s last wish

Old Cyrus Hamp, an infamous Wall Street magnate, nears death and his family fakes a newspaper obituary to comfort him. The ruse backfires when Cyrus, irate at the flattering tribute, vows to outlive the fake and exposes the deceit. The tale intertwines a literary quarrel over The Burial of Sir John Moore with a broader satire of reputation and notoriety.
