Mile Markers Show Colonial Foot Longer Than Modern
A U S Coast and Geodetic survey notes the Mason Dixon line mile markers were about 10 to 12 feet longer apart than today. Chief Meade says Colonial foot was roughly a quarter inch longer, making a modern mile require about 10 extra feet for the same distance. The 1961 62 resurvey found markers spaced farther apart but within historical accuracy.
