Destructive fire destroys J. M. coal mine near city
A fire yesterday afternoon around 3 o clock destroyed the engine and boiler room hoisting gear and mine machinery of the J. M. coal mine two miles southwest of town causing about ten thousand dollars in damage and closing the mine for an undetermined period. The wind and firefighters saved the tipple. The origin is unknown. The mine is owned by High Grade Coal Co Terre Haute with stockholders Clem and Frank Richards and John T Beasley. Insurance was carried but likely insufficient. Company heads have not yet spoken but repair and reopening are expected as enough coal remains to operate for about two years.

Loganberry: A Distinct Fruit From California Origins
Loganberry, related to the raspberry and blackberry, originated by Judge J. H. Logan in Santa Cruz California in 1881. It is possibly a cross of a California wild blackberry and a red raspberry, though some authorities view it as a distinct fruit not a hybrid. The purplish red, large fruit resembles the blackberry and is widely cultivated from British Columbia to Southern California.
