The Linton Civitan Club hosts a weeklong radio auction on WBTO AM from 6 to 8 p.m. each evening with county merchants donating merchandise to highest bidders. Bid calls are 847-2231. The Linton Elks Lodge holds a Flag Day program on the Elks lawn at 6 30 p.m. Tuesday, invitation extended to the public.
Indiana Civil Defense Director Mitnick to study water supply problems after Sen. Bayh asks Gov. Bowen to check for drought relief eligibility. Bayh notes 175 million in federal aid under 1977 act for grants and loans to augment community water, while Indiana Gas Co seeks 13.8 million yearly rate hike to 8.9 percent, filed with the Indiana Public Service Commission for a single rate schedule across 45 counties after the merger of Central Indiana Gas Co. and its former subsidiary.
W Graham Claytor said Congress may allow women on temporary duty aboard combat ships in peacetime on an experimental basis noting biology and safety. Separately, new Labor Department rules grant released prisoners unemployment and public works eligibility to curb recidivism as $4 billion in federal job funds flow to states.

Local youths from Greene County join over Indiana residents at 1977 Hoosier Boys State on the Indiana State University Terre Haute campus. Participants include Herb Abbott Dwight Osha Brad McCammon William Mullis Stu Floyd Richard Harmon and William Stevenson. The program features mock elections with Federalist and Nationalist parties and speakers from state government and law enforcement.
James Earl Ray, the confessed King killer, was found hiding under leaves in the Cumberland Mountains after a 54 hour escape. Donald Ray Caylor was arrested in Oak Ridge during the manhunt. Donald Shelton remained at large nearby as bloodhounds closed in. Ray and Caylor were returned to Brushy Mountain State Prison.
Paul Fry and Gene Falk, retiring Greene County General Hospital Board members, were honored at a hospital reception. Judge Edwin B. Long presented Fry with a framed letter from judges and commended him on 49 years of service, including two building expansions and the Lone Tree Road hospital. Maynard Baggio and Judge David Johnson praised Fry and Falk with decor and gifts.
