Agriculture Department estimates the 1956 wheat crop at 922,672,000 bushels, down from 1955's 938,159,000. Winter and spring yields are forecast with 88 percent spring crop condition on June 1. rye and hay conditions also reported, while May milk and egg outputs rise from April.
Davenport report says Rock Island line engineer E. Snyder stalled a freight near Durant for a hotbox and forgot the 25 trailing cars. He backed up to recover them, delaying a Des Moines passenger train two hours until he reclaimed the cars.

Two year old Vickie Kirk died after a vaporizer spilled steam onto her in a fall at home in Indianapolis. Parents Mr and Mrs Albert Kirk report the accident occurred three weeks ago.

House Judiciary Chairman Emanuel Celler says the panel will decide this week whether to send a disability bill to the floor. The constitution leaves the incapacitation method open and vice president succession unsettled.
Monday topped 1956 heat records at Elliston with a 93 degree high while White River remained high at 11.10 feet. A slow cool front moved across the West and Midwest bringing relief. readings near Minneapolis 96 and Mobridge 103 noted as the nation endures a widespread heat wave.

Roman Kazimierczyk, 22, a Pole on a visiting archery team, escaped from Communist guards in London with help from Polish refugees. He entered the team's dressing room with his brother Joseph, then fled to a waiting car and safety with the free Polish community.

In Worthington Indiana Justice of the Peace Mrs Elmira Driscol fined two motorists. Lee Virgil Wesner of Indianapolis pleaded guilty to disregarding a stop sign at state roads 54 and 57 and was fined 1 dollar plus costs totaling 15 dollars. James C Smith of Indianapolis was fined 1 dollar plus costs for speeding 30 in a 20 mile per hour zone at Shakamak state park after Memorial Day arrest.

Keith Allen age 20 of Bloomfield rural route set for trial in Sullivan circuit court on charges of passing fraudulent checks. He pleaded not guilty through court appointed attorney R W Shaughnessy after arrest following a suspected bogus check attempt at Carlisle. Police say Allen issued more than 30 fraudulent checks totaling 800 to 900 dollars during a three month spree across four counties in Southwestern Indiana.
Greencastle Ind. Donald Brown age 24 a Public Service Co of Indiana lineman was fatally shocked Monday while contacting a 7200 volt wire on a pole at Limedale. Brown was a utility line worker for the company.
In Southport Indiana a lone gunman held bank president John A. Whalen and his wife at gunpoint for seven hours and escaped with about $65,000 from Southport State Bank the largest Indiana bank heist in 28 years. The bandit drove Whalen to the bank in his own car and used a time lock to access the vault while police searched the area for the Oldsmobile AP-199 and the suspect.
In Stockholm Prince Bertil of Sweden dismissed rumors of a romance with Princess Margaret during her visit for the Olympic equestrian games. The 44 year old prince, son of King Gustaf VI Adolf, stated he has no intention to marry the British princess, who is 25.
At Shakamak state park an eight year old Lewis boy named Johnny Swalls wandered from his mother and headed to the gate house instead of the family car. Park authorities and lifeguards mounted a search but he was found safe at the gate and bathers returned to the water.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles described the Soviet Union as still ruled by a dictatorship. He noted Khrushchev’s attacks on Stalin may not indicate a shift to democracy but could aim to reassure subject peoples that the dictatorship is acceptable. He urged government by consent of the governed as the cure for Soviet tyranny.
Mrs Mildred Rupert attended commencement exercises at Indiana University over the weekend. She was accompanied by Mrs Robert Sloan of Linton. Jerry B Rupert received his Bachelor of Science degree in Geology.
