In Indianapolis on June 12, the Dove family of 12, aged one to 13, faced eviction from their storeroom home after the landlord was ordered to vacate by the City Board of Health. The landlord cited nonpayment of $15 monthly rent, while the health board advised against occupancy due to plumbing concerns.
A family moved furniture from a storeroom to an empty lot under police pressure to remove it within an hour. Mrs Dove prepared meals while neighbors offered shelter until new housing was found. City Safety Board President Will Remy ordered a canvas cover over the furniture after the case came to light.
Judge Woslow warned jurors after it emerged that Charles Hatfield rode to the trial with Deputy County Prosecuting Attorney Kern G. Beasley. The court accepted waivers from the defense and prosecution for a trial continuation. Character witnesses testified Viola and Hansford Gofourth were of good character.
On a porch near the Marth and Dig Valley, Mrs. Johnson and Emily discuss life under war strain as Pinky fears for Martha and Ada. A Jewish sailor and local gossip spark tension while neighbors argue over radios, sympathy, and social barriers before a cliffhanger ending.
