Indianapolis prosecutors say former Gov. George N. Craig will be questioned by a Marion County Grand Jury within three weeks as it probes Indiana highway irregularities. Linton hosts a six team sea son’s preview with a downtown parade at 5 PM Monday followed by three two inning games at High School park. Official play starts Tuesday with four evening games 530 PM involving Citizens Bank Elks GE and others.
Indiana state police announced six radar cars will go on operation June 15 to catch speeders on state highways. Troopers will issue warning tickets for two or three months before arrests begin.

Worthington resident Elmer Stewart 43 who has multiple sclerosis is mobile again thanks to funds raised by the Worthington Lions and community donors. He received an electric-powered chair on March 22 and a Lions pen emblem of honorary membership. The drive included a successful public square dance despite bad weather. Stewart, afflicted since 1933 and diagnosed 1949, is paralyzed from the waist down but says MS may be dormant. He and wife Zelda, with daughter Janet, appreciate supporters who funded the $507 chair. The drive aids MS research and a new IU Medical Center MS Clinic with Indiana fund-raising totaling about $100,000. The piece notes MS cause unknown and no cure, with MS often striking ages 20–40.
A strong windstorm struck Lyons and surrounding areas on May 18 causing extensive damage to farms. The belt of destruction stretched from southwest of Lyons to southeast of the community, with major losses at the Lowell and Raymond McKee farms including a concrete block barn, hog house, and damaged residences. Telephone lines and poles were downed along the road crossing the Pennsylvania railroad. Hail accompanied the winds, with stones up to two inches long, causing crop damage and minor roof and structural harms in several farms and in Sandborn and Newberry towns.
The Saratoga headlined a carrier task force canceling much of a planned display of jet planes missiles and naval tech for President Eisenhower and three cabinet members. A rescue mission searched Atlantic waters after a pilot was spotted in a life raft off Georgia.
The Linton Fire department was summoned to the John Winters farm east of here Thursday afternoon after a tractor caught fire. The tractor sustained extensive damage.
Dr Antonio Moreira said quintuplets born to Selina Corone in Villa de Joabe lo Mozambique died within 24 hours. He noted the infants had no chance of survival from birth and that tribal custom once dictated killing multiples.
Amelia Ethel Bovenschen 72 lifelong Linton resident died at 11:35 this morning at Freeman-Greene county hospital after illness since August 4 1956. She was born October 30 1884 near Linton daughter of James and Ardella Pope. Survived by son Arthur Willian Bovenschen two brothers William A Pope and Leonard Pope five grandchildren and other predeceased children and siblings. Funeral at Olive Branch church Monday at 2 with Donald McClintick officiating burial in Fairview cemetery.
Mrs. Jessie Benton Liffick aged 63 of Linton died at 7 00 PM Thursday in University Hospital Minneapolis following a lengthy illness. She lived at 347 East Vincennes street after moving from Terre Haute fifteen years ago and is survived by husband Alva Liffick son Harold A Liffick of Terre Haute daughter Erma L Modesitt of Terre Haute three brothers Walter Lathrop Clarence Lathrop and Raymond Lathrop a sister Mrs Fern Evans and three grandchildren. Funeral arrangements call for arrival of the body in Terre Haute Saturday and services Monday at Callahan Funeral Home with Rev Arthur Anderson officiating followed by burial at Roselawn Memorial Park Terre Haute.
The weatherman predicts mostly pleasant temperatures with moderate rainfall across Indiana for the next five days. A cool south and central pattern is expected Saturday and Sunday with a warming trend Monday and Tuesday and cooler again Wednesday. Rain totals vary from a quarter to three quarters of an inch with scattered showers and thunderstorms tonight Saturday and again around Tuesday.
Monroe County Council of Social Agencies backed a $2.3 million 100 bed hospital project after a survey favored new construction over expanding Bloomington Hospital. Officials earlier opposed fundraising, with support to come from gifts and county and federal appropriations.
