Indictments for Murder and Hoosier Coal Merger Talks
Indictments for murder lead the list as Indiana coal operators discuss a proposed massive merger to control roughly a quarter of the state's mines. Chase National Bank of New York reportedly plans financing, with aim to reduce production costs by unified management. Ed Logsdon of Knox Consolidated confirms awareness, while Phil Penna remains away. Indiana operators press for a union to beat non union rivals in West Virginia and Kentucky amid a stagnant market and widespread closures. The plan includes Knox Mining, Howe-Coulter, and Panhandle mines, seeking lower costs after wartime wage scales and stalled wage cuts. Illinois mirrors the strain with many mines shut as prices and output fluctuate.
