The county mourns Clyde Flory a longtime official known for community work. Two Greene County teens died in separate traffic crashes within about an hour Saturday night. Brenda Girdley 19 of Owensburg died in a head on collision on highway 45 near its junction with highway 231. Steven Douglas Whaley 15 of Lyons Route 1 died when his motorcycle struck a stopped pickup on highway 231 south of Bloomfield near the Family Drive-In theater.
Clyde Flory longtime Bloomfield resident and Greene County commissioner died at 6 a.m. Saturday at his home after a period of illness. Born October 13 1899 in Richland township he was a retired rural mail carrier and active in many groups including the 1.O.C.F. lodge Odd Fellows American Legion and Masonic orders. Survivors include his wife Ora E Flory a step daughter and son two step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at Jenkins Funeral Home Bloomfield with interment at Calvertville cemetery and 1.O.C.F. lodge graveside rites.
George A. Hawkins 22 of Bloomington formerly of Linton died at 3 a m Sunday in Bloomington hospital from injuries in an automobile crash on highway 37 near Bloomington. Driver Robert A. Conway 25 of Fort Wayne escaped injury and faces six charges. Funeral services set for 2 p m Tuesday at Welch and Cornett Funeral Home Linton with Rev John Thrasher. burial Olive Branch Cemetery. The American Legion will conduct graveside rites.
Greene County remains among nine Indiana counties eligible for Economic Development Administration aid for public works and business development. The county’s 1966 unemployment averaged 7.5 percent, down from 9.7 percent in 1965, with 9.4 percent in February and 9.0 in April this year. Lawrence and Clay Counties left the program this year.
Two drowning victims in Indiana include Terre Haute industrialist Michael D. Yatswo 70 and Ronald Rutz 17 of LaPorte. Yatswo died after his fishing boat overturned on a private lake near Keller while Rutz drowned at a gravel pit near Westville. Both bodies recovered.
Thousands of U S Marines pressed through a coastal valley south of Da Nang pursuing up to 2000 retreating Communist troops after heavy weekend fighting. The battle left at least 540 North Vietnamese dead, with 73 Marines killed and 139 wounded.
A three alarm fire hit Evansville Indiana today damaging six downtown shops before control was achieved in two hours. The blaze started in a third floor attic above Smith & Butterfield fire equipment and stationery and spread to Schamberg Dress Shop, a premier ready to wear store. Damages were estimated in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
About 10 000 electrical workers across nine cities stayed off the job at RCA plants including Bloomington Indiana as IBEW members press for higher pay. Bloomington voted 1363 to 1145 to accept a contract but followed international headquarters and struck. The dispute covers Bloomington Marion and six other cities with proposed raises of 6 5 percent over three years versus a company offer of 4 percent first year and 3 percent in the next two.
A massive blackout hit New Jersey and much of southeastern Pennsylvania. Electric clocks stopped in Newark at 10 23 a m EDT. Hospitals operated on generators as police reported loss of power, lights, and phone service across Newark Jersey City Trenton Camden Philadelphia Harrisburg Allentown and nearby areas.
Rich ard Speck was sentenced to death for the July 14 massacre that killed eight nurses in Chicago. Judge Herbert C. Pachen set execution in Illinois’ electric chair for September 1, while awaiting a final order by the Illinois Supreme Court. The jury had recommended death, a common practice in Illinois.
In Manchester England 72 of 84 aboard a DC4 tour plane died after Sunday crash near Stockton. Earlier another DC4 crashed into mountainside in the French Pyrenees killing 88 aboard. Queen Elizabeth II voiced shock and grieved with the nation and asked government to convey sympathy to victims families.
Congressional leaders from both parties urged restraint in the Mideast war and asked the United Nations to lead efforts to halt the fighting. They received a one hour private briefing from Secretary of State Dean Rusk and Defense Secretary Robert S McNamara.

Greene County court house will close at noon Tuesday for Commissioner Clyde Flory funeral. Commissioners approved a resolution in memory of Flory at the June meeting in the court house this morning. the sole business was approving all claims.
Band director William Pirtle calls Linton High School band practice for Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the band room. All members, new and old, should attend with instruments for the July 4 parade. graduates wishing to participate are welcome.
