Mrs Crystal Malone 46 of Coalmont died from severe burns received Tuesday morning when kerosene spilled on a fire caused an explosion while heating water. Nevada Balloon Detonation Marks Smallest AEC Test Yet
An Atomic Energy Commission device was fired at 4 46 a m PDT from a captive balloon 500 feet above Yucca Flat Nevada. The Livermore laboratory conducted 45 experiments including rabbit eyes tests. It was the first AEC balloon detonation and observers call it one of the smallest yields likely under one kiloton. The fireball appeared briefly before dawn over the Nevada testing grounds 75 miles northwest. Ballon safety measures were designed to prevent a free lift due to a one in a million failure.
