Debts Show Increases Farm Interest Costs May Climb

Agriculture Department economists project 1962 farm interest costs about 6 percent higher than 1961 due to a larger debt. Farm debts on Jan 1 1961 totaled 25.4 billion, up 1.3 billion from the prior year, with total interest payments in 1961 around 50 percent higher than five years earlier. The study notes that rates have been stable but future loans carry higher rates, and taxes on farm real estate will rise about 6 percent in 1962 to 11.361 billion, elevating taxes per acre to about 1.27 dollars.
