A U S Soil Conservation Service survey shows Indiana lost 710000 acres of cropland to subdivisions industry roads and other non farming uses in the last decade. If the trend continues all cropland could be out of production in 160 years. Swain notes four lane highways remove at least 40 acres per mile and urges converting marginal land to pasture or trees.
