RaNefer Mummy Faces Challenge to Oldest Claim

London June 19 At the Egyptology section of the British Museum attendants say Ra Nefer, an Egyptian mummy, may no longer be the oldest known. A new contender is Sechem Nefer, wife of Sechem Nefer, whose remains were studied after rumors of her age. Experts note Ra Nefer’s curled lip and green eyebrows remain distinctive though the mummy shows many injuries from tomb robbers. A provisional claim suggests Sechem Nefer may be older, with X rays and modern treatment cited, while Ra Nefer continues to be examined by Sir Flinders Petrie’s team.
