Crisis Averted as Reds Return to West Germany
About 9,000 Communist youths who resisted border checks for a day agreed to registration and medical exams to cross into West Germany and return home. They lined up at Holz and Eich border points, gave names and addresses, then boarded trains and buses amid police alarms and fears of disease. Earlier, 1,500 police rushed to the area to enforce the crossing rules. The event followed a weekend rally in Berlin and a separate night march by 1,000 youths into Western Berlin to hear jazz and pick up souvenirs, despite censorship of Western tunes in the Soviet zone.
