Timber Resources in Canada Highlight Spruce Stock and Uses

Canada’s standing timber is largely spruce comprising one third of the total. Estimates range from 100 000 000 000 to 150 000 000 000 board feet suitable for lumber and 400 000 000 to 800 000 000 cords of pulp wood, with only half potentially commercially accessible. Felix S 8 Johnson notes red spruce is confined to maritime provinces and eastern Quebec, white and black spruce span from Atlantic to Alaska, Sitka spruce in Pacific coastal regions, Engelmann spruce in southern BC interiors. Sitka spruce can reach 8–12 feet in diameter and 160–180 feet tall and proved valuable for aircraft frames during the war. Canada's spruce production in 1919 was 44 million in timber and 28 million in pulp wood.
