Greene County deputies investigated a break-in at the L and M School near Lyons. Principal George Brown said a window in the office was broken, but nothing appeared missing. Deputies checked the building between 3 and 4 am. Brown noted intruders may have been inside at the time.
President Ford celebrated his 63rd birthday with a routine physical examination conducted at the White House by Dr. William Lukash. A family gathering for cornbeef and cabbage dinner followed, with a full report expected later today. Commerce Department data showed May inventories rising by 1.9 billion dollars, a 0.7 percent gain and the largest up-tick in 17 months, suggesting the recovery pace may be slowing after March aid.

NASA in Pasadena reports Viking 1 has chosen a safe Mars landing area after 25 days of searching and two postponements. The $500 million rover will touch down July 20, seven years after Apollo 11. The new site lies 460 miles NW of the original and 150 miles W of the prior second choice.
