Buford Fall of Putnam County reports 43 728 plates stacked in his garage saved since 1934 for steel use in 1944 plates. The note lists many states represented amid wartime conservation efforts and a mosaic of local reminiscences and quips from the community.
Mr and Mrs Fred Dennis formerly of Linton announce the birth of a daughter in the Methodist hospital at Indianapolis. The baby is named Donna Sue. This is the second child in the home. Mrs Dennis is formerly Miss Mazel Sinders of Jasonville.
London reports the badly shot-up Japanese fleet has been cornered in the narrows off New Georgia after the Kula gulf clash. Preliminary U.S. counts indicate six Japanese cruisers and destroyers sunk, with one cruiser and one destroyer lost.
Ralph L Hasler fifteen year old son of Mr and Mrs James Hasler of Newberry is in critical condition at Freeman Keene County Hospital after an accident on the county road between Newberry and Lyons. He was riding on top of a cattle truck when a wire struck him and he fell to the pavement. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition.
A fatal automobile crash occurred one mile east of Bloomfield on State Road 54 during a county blackout Tuesday evening. Mrs. Mert Heaton died at the scene riding with Mrs. Ray Dilley. another passenger, Mrs. Francis Smith, survived. Driver Micheal Obermeyer state game warden and air raid warden sustained injuries. all others injured were hospitalized with varying injuries. Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Heaton were announced.
Charles T. White, 83, of Terre Haute, son of Mr and Mrs Earl White of Worthington, died from suffocation and severe burns after a bed fire at his 19 West Twenty-first Street home. He was found in a bedroom closet after waking to the blaze. Vigo County coroner investigates. Mrs White was away. White worked at the Wabash Ordnance Plant. Funeral arrangements pending at Ryan Funeral Home.
Barbara Thea Drackett daughter of Mr and Mrs Jay Drackett submitted to a tonsillectomy Tuesday morning at the hospital.
Charles Good won a $100 war savings bond at the Fourth of July celebration closing in Haseman's grove. Other bond winners were Mrs. Alice Strong Mrs. Edith Hanger Irvin Steward and Charles Good. A partial prize list from the parade includes Buddy Klein Peggy Klein M Fusco Donald Brannon Jerry Landis Betty Anderson Dr M E Tomak Bobby White and Eugene Hartman Elaine Tincher with others to follow.
The City Sluggers beat Johnson 1 0 at the high school park. Blackburn allowed two hits for City Sluggers and Gilmore gave up three for Johnson. The winning run came on Blackburns single by MceNew. Public invited to upcoming games Ajax vs Jaycees Elks vs 41Fs Maumee Colleries vs Merchants.
The Junior and Young Peoples Department of the First Christian church will host a Friday evening picnic at Shak amak state park with transportation provided. Children are asked to bring wieners buns and money for drinks.
The Linton Lodge No. 560 F. and A. M. announces a meeting in the hall Thursday at 7 30 PM. Work in the M M degree will be performed. All members are urged to attend.
The U S Navy confirmed the sinking of the light cruiser Helena, a 7399 ton ship carrying about 883 crew, in the Kula Gulf engagement as part of the central Solomons campaign. Helena was commanded by Captain Charles Purcell Cecil of Louisville Kentucky who earned the navy cross in Santa Cruz action. The navy said six Japanese warships were probably sunk and that American ships shelled Kiska in the Aleutians showing Pacific fleet strength across theaters.
A New Union lumber truck driven by Jess Miller collided with an egg truck driven by Clarence Hartley near a junk yard in West Linton on Tuesday afternoon. Hartley slowed for a backing car, Antibus, but Miller could not stop, causing extensive damage to the lumber truck’s front end. no eggs were broken.
The senate passes a resolution to permit selling corn at 1.40 dollars per bushel, 33 cents above the current price ceiling, and sends it to the house for action. The day also reports RAF Mosquito patrols on French railways and mine-laying in European waters, plus German claims of a Russian breakthrough at Kursk and two U boat sinkings by the RAF in Atlantic and Mediterranean waters.
Mrs. Opal Alward is notified her son Albert Leroy Bernes, an eighteen year old United States Marine Corps recruit who joined in February 1942, will be awarded the Purple Heart posthumously for his death on October 9 1942 in the Solomon Islands. He was a member of the First Marine Division under Major General Vandergrift and a Linton Lockton high school senior. The Asia Pacific Campaign medal will be issued six months after the war ends. The notice came from the Commandant of the United States Marine Corps. Bernes was the grandson of Mr and Mrs S C Roeder.
Indiana state board of finance raises minimum teacher salaries by 50 dollars for the last half of the 1942 43 school year. The action makes the state contribute 89 percent of minimum salaries. A first payment of 400 dollars was already made and a second payment of 450 dollars will go to educational units in August as repayment for salaries already paid.
Charles Gadberry a 71 year old Sullivan man faces murder charges in the death of his brother Mack 74. He filed a temporary insanity plea and an alternate not guilty by self defense plea as doctors are to report sanity findings during the trial a 30 member special jury was drawn.
Wartime dispatch reports Nazi forces pressing near Belgorod and Orel while Soviet counterattacks push back German armored units. Red Star accounts claim heavy losses for Germany, including tanks, planes, and men, as fronts engage near Belgorod and Orel with renewed reconnaissance around Smolensk.
Linton residents responded to the states biggest surprise blackout last night covering ten counties in the Terre Haute district. Civilian defense officials said the test alert was mostly successful with minor violations and some confusion over signal timing.
The Linton Concert Band will present a concert at the carnival grounds in Haseman's Grove Thursday at eight p m. The program and band personnel will be announced later. The public is invited to attend.
Charles Earl, manager of the City Dog Pound, asks residents to bring all stray dogs to the pound before next Wednesday due to rationing and tire shortages. The pound is located one block south of College Hill school in West Linton.
The F I H C will meet tonight at Humphreys Park at 7 10 o clock. Attendees are asked to bring a thirty cent gift and a covered dish.
