Parade marshal Charles Hazelrigg led a record crowd through a brisk forty five minute march in Linton with visitors from Terre Haute Bicknell Indianapolis and nearby towns. The event drew cheers for floats and civic pride while local columnists note playful anecdotes and a sunny weather day.
Britain lodged a protest with Cuba over the seizure of the Shell oil refinery in Havana. Diplomatic sources say the U S is considering a similar protest over Esso and Texaco refineries. British Ambassador Stanley Forhan delivered the note, seeking normal footing for Shell operations and reserving legal rights in the dispute.
Richard M. Joseph, 36, of Terre Haute was killed Monday night when the car he rode in missed a curve in a Terre Haute suburb and struck a pole. Driver Herbert W. Patton, 37, and two other passengers were injured.
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond St. John of Jasonville announce the birth of a son at Free man Greene county hospital Erie day. The baby weighs six pounds three ounces and has been named David Lane.
Two tiny midget racing planes collided during a six plane consolation at Baer Field Fort Wayne Indiana. Both pilots James L Rice 35 airport manager Van Wert Ohio and Charles Bishop 35 Nashville Tennessee were killed. The wing of Rice’s plane reportedly came off in a sharp turn striking Bishop’s plane.
Mayor P. H. Ohern and Harold Shorter announced a revised spraying plan for flies and mosquitoes in Linton due to weather. Wednesday areas include North Main to Milwaukee railroad. Thursday covers east of the railroad to the campus. Friday spans West Linton to corporation limits west of the railroad and north of the IC tracks. Residents with mosquito havens may notify the crew for no charge treatment.
Clint Riggs age 83 of Sullivan route three died Monday afternoon at St. Anthony hospital Terre Haute. He was a retired livestock dealer member of Dodds Bridge Methodist church. Survived by widow Julia Riggs three daughters Hallie Wisener Elsie Arnett Julia Stevens one sister Daisy Huntsman thirteen grandchildren 1 great grandchildren two great great grandchildren. Funeral 2:00 Wednesday at Alexander Funeral Home Sullivan burial Drake Cemetery.
Wayne Lavern Reed, a Linton freshman, is among 585 Purdue students with an index of 5.70 for the second semester of 1959 60, as part of 672 scholars attaining the Distinguished Rating. Eighty seven students posted the perfect index of 6.0, and 585 joined them with 5.5 or higher.
A $130,000 blaze in Hanover Indiana gutted a one story concrete warehouse, starting in the furniture section and quickly spreading through the building. Owner Charles Hensler estimated merchandise losses at $100,000 and the building value at $30,000.
Sen. John F. Kennedy declared he would not quit the presidential race in a televised News conference addressing former President Truman. He defended an open convention, denied pressuring delegates, and emphasized his early primary entry and resilience against opposition.

United Press International reports 18 dead in Indiana over the 78 hour Fourth of July weekend with seven traffic deaths and six drownings. state tolls include motorists in Fort Wayne and Crawfordsville, plus drownings at Fox Lake and Lake Shafer. Nationwide toll exceeds 400 with California leading at 31 deaths.
Greene County high school bands invited to Indiana University’s 11th Fall Band Day Festival on October 15 at the 48,000 seat stadium. In 1979 about 6,000 bandsmen from 107 Hoosier high schools performed in Old Memorial Stadium. The new IU athletic plant includes a stadium fieldhouse a future 18,000 seat arena and Olympic swimming pool.
Senate Democratic Leader Lyndon Johnson announced he will actively seek the presidential nomination. In Havana, Jose Miro Cardona the Cuban ambassador to the United States sought political asylum at the Argentine embassy.

Mrs. Ruby Lee Dayhoff of Worthington route two died at 1:00 Sunday night at Union hospital Terre Haute aged 27. She recently gave birth to Samuel Lee Dayhoff and is survived by her husband, son, parents, and one sister. Funeral set for Lincoln Christian church Wednesday at 2:00 with three ministers officiating. Burial in Walker cemetery.
