Robert A. Watts, 25, a truck driver, was sentenced to death in the Indiana electric chair for the murder of Mrs. Mary Burney, who resisted his rape attempt in Indianapolis. He confessed to the crime and to killing Mrs. Mabel Merrifield in a prior incident, though he was not tried for that murder. The verdict followed a 13 day trial in Unelby circuit court after a venue change from Indianapolis. Watts admitted planning and attempting more rapes and using his job to locate victims.
Fresno reports identify 12 of 82 bodies from a DC 3 crash near Coalinga California. 32 people died including 28 Mexican workers, an American crew, and a U S immigration inspector. Many victims may never be positively identified.
Mary Jane and Fern Hoffmaster, both 23, are twins who married in a double ceremony to twin spouses, continuing a shared life in Reading, Pennsylvania. The report notes both couples married in a coordinated event.
The administration asked Congress for immediate price controls on meat and related products. Assistant Secretary Charles F. A Brownstown native, she holds a B S in Home Economics from Indiana University. She taught in Muncie and Bloomfield and has long 4 H and Girl Scout leadership experience. The appointment has approval from the Greene County Home Economics Council and Purdue University.
A nearly 30 foot python at Evansville Mesker Zoo died from a throat tumor. The snake, brought from India 18 years ago as a 10 foot juvenile, lived in a glass cage with a constant 78 degree habitat year round.
Indiana bids accepted for 11 highway and bridge projects to be opened Feb. 17 by the State Highway Commission. Projects include steel superstructure for a new Wabash River bridge at Montezuma, a 75 foot steel beam bridge on Ind 37 near Martinsville, a 40 foot reinforced concrete girder over Jordan Creek on Ind 37, a reinforced concrete arch over Prairie Creek near Lebanon, grading and paving on U S 52 to Lebanon, widening on Ind 22 from Gas City to Upland, and grading and drainage on U S 30 from Columbia City to near Larwell.
In Greene circuit court at Bisioomfield jurors failed to reach a verdict in the suit John R. Owens of Sullivan vs Marie Monroe of Sullivan. The auto truck collision case sought $20 000 in damages and was dismissed after deliberations extended overnight. The court notes a string of hung juries since 1947.
In New Albany Indiana Rev Melvin Ramsey a 37 year old Church of God pastor died of diphtheria after he refused medical treatment as against his religious beliefs He was found dying at home by Dr C E Briscoe city health director His widow Mrs Mary Ramsey later consented to inoculation for herself and five children aged 3 to 14 Four other diphtheria cases were reported in Floyd County
Bloomfield and nearby towns report several hospital events. Virgil Adkins and Mrs. Lee Allen were admitted yesterday for medical treatment, with Mrs. Jennie Doyle undergoing minor surgery today. Dismissals include Mrs. Burt Kinnaman, Walter Sexton, and Mrs. Margaret Brandon. The Rodecker baby and Juanita rodecker also went home yesterday, and John Smith and William Wilson left for home today.
Vanderburgh grand jury reports former prosecutor Milford Miller did not destroy 10 slot machines seized in a gambling raid. Judge Nat Youngblood reviewed the findings as Miller left office December 31. The panel said devices may have caused confusion but found no evidence they were used.
In Lawrenceburg Indiana a man and woman were found dead in a car inside a garage by construction at a house. Herbert Wallace 38 and Ann Boles Theege 38 both of Lawrenceburg rural route one died from carbon monoxide fumes. Dearborn County authorities and state police investigated.
In Waynesburg Pennsylvania 77 year old attorney A L Moredock celebrated his birthday by skating a neat figure eight on an ice rink to prove he remains a top amateur figure skater in the district. He also enjoys baseball and golf.
Indianapolis banker Schricker announces he will not be a candidate for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination leaving the field open. Harry McClain is poised to announce his bid as other potential contenders reassess their plans. Schricker supporters abandon his campaign and debate future alignments as Watkins contemplates a second slot if Schricker leads the ticket.
Carl Wampler, Bloomfield War Veteran and Richland township resident, seeks the Republican nomination for Greene County sheriff in the May 4 primary. A 28 year old farmer, truck driver and timber cutter, he served seven years in the U S Navy including time in a Japanese prison camp. He is married with one child and asks Greene County voters for support.
Lassie a four year old watch dog and her two year old son Teddy will join the city payroll at Canarsie Cemetery Borough President John Cashmore announced. They will work nights after daytime workers leave and be fed for five dollars a month.

Fire destroyed 33 oil storage tanks at the Certified Core Oil plant in Cicero, with eight tanks ablaze after the initial ignition at the base of an 8,000 gallon tank. Investigators assess the cause as workers inspect eight other tanks while losses are estimated between 500000 and 750000 dollars.
A flue fire last night at about 8:30 reached the home of Mr and Mrs Bill Roberts in South Linton causing about 25 dollars in damage. The residence is owned by Ray Barnard and was attended by the Linton City Fire Department.
