Checks Cashed in New York Hit Record High

New York State records show check cashing in the past year ending June 30 1959 reached a record level. A total of 6 396 739 checks were cashed, about 494 000 more than the prior year, an 8 percent rise, with dollar volumes at 405 million dollars, up 9 percent.

Lethal Firewood Sought in State

A Randolph County farmer reported a theft of wood from his pile and said he had booby trapped part of the load with dynamite and detonating caps. State and county authorities warned residents to avoid burning wood from uncertain origins and police said the dynamite could destroy a house if ignited.

Owen Funeral Held At Jasonville Today

William Owen 75 died at Logansport State hospital after two years of poor health. Born July 28, 1884 in Clay county, he lived most of his life in Jasonville. Survived by wife Eva who died in 1951, a daughter Marie Hamlin, three sons Wilmer Riley Arthur, three brothers Everett Boyd Perry, one sister Daisy Misher, 21 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at McClanahan Funeral Home in Jasonville by Rev. Dale Owen, with burial in Peavey Cemetery.

Soncrant Funeral Set in Jasonville for Paul Soncrant

Paul Soncrant, 36, of Chesterton, died Sunday at Doctor's hospital in Michigan City. Survived by widow Betty Bohnert Sonerant, two sons Toby and Billy, daughter Sandy, mother Mrs. Paul Soncrant of Michigan City, and father Ellery Soncrant of Adrian, Mich. Body to be returned to McClanahan funeral home in Jasonville. Funeral services at the Jasonville funeral home at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday with burial in Lebadon Cemetery.

Greene Named to National Advisory Group

New York George E. Greene CPA of Linton has been named to the advisory committee of local practitioners for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He is a past president of the Linton Rotary Club and former vice president of the Linton Chamber of Commerce, and serves as secretary of the Indiana Association of CPAs. The nine member committee reviews Institute policies and services and recommends steps to boost benefits for smaller accounting firms.

Hospital Guild Plans For Annual Card Party

The Freeman Greene county hospital guild will stage its annual benefit card party at the American Legion annex on South Washington street in Bloomfield at 7 30 o clock Monday evening February 8. Mrs Maynard Raggio chairs the county wide preparations and ticket chair Kenneth Broshears will be assisted by several committee members. Proceeds fund hospital equipment purchases with a public invitation extended to attend.

Sandborn Net Five Wins Prelim Title in Wabash Valley

The Sandborn High School basketball team earned a quarter-final spot in the 1960 Wabash Valley tournament by edging Bruceville and Decker by one point each. Decker Chapel beat Oaktown 54-49 to reach Sullivan quarter-finals, where Sandborn faces Carlisle Indians at 8 30 p m Wednesday while Decker Chapel faces Honey Creek at 7 p m. The Blue Jays had earlier squeaked past Bruceville 56 55 and beat Decker 37 36, overcoming a 32 29 halftime deficit and a 47 42 score entering the final period.
