Court will study contempt charge at hearing today

Washington today opens Supreme Court hearings on whether John L. Lewis and the United Mine Workers were properly held in contempt for the November coal strike. The case centers on fines totaling 3.5 million dollars for the union and 10 thousand dollars for Lewis, with arguments over injunctions and anti union laws.

Tourney Tigret Tickets Announced at Linton Stockton High

Students at Linton Stockton High School may buy Wabash Valley preliminary tourney tickets for Thursday and Friday evening sessions at the high school. There will be no season tickets or advance single session sales for adults. Student tickets per session are 30 cents and adult tickets 50 cents. Coaches and principals meeting in Linton Monday night confirmed no season tickets.

John Rusher age 53 died suddenly at 3 p m Monday at his Indianapolis home after moving from Greene county seven years ago. Survived by widow Hazel L. Ermiil P. O'Donald a Bloomfield World War I veteran died at the Veterans Hospital in Indianapolis after a lingering illness. Born near Scotland on October 20 1886 he was 60. Rossow Named Indiana State Police Superintendent

Industry Membership Drive Keeps Up Momentum in Linton

The Daily Citizen reports continued house to house canvassing to sell membership certificates for the Industries fund in Linton. A list of twenty eight initial purchasers and a second batch from two local banks is named, with proceeds to cover building remodeling and factory acquisition costs. Leaders include Harry Haseman and Clyde Spensler among others, as residents purchase certificates in $25 units.

Judge Refuses Pelleys Habeas Petition in Sedition Case

Terre Haute Ind Jan 14 William Dudley Pelleys bid for freedom from a 15 year federal prison term failed when Federal Judge Robert Baltzell denied his petition for a writ of habeas corpus. Pelley formerly led the Silver Shirts and had been a Noblesville publisher. He was convicted in Indianapolis in 1942 and is now in U S custody in Washington. Baltzell ruled the petition could not go forward because Pelley is no longer in Overlades custody.

Smoke destroys bed in city after in-bed smoking incident

Bobby Alderson of the Robert Norris residence on Ninth and H streets northeast smoked in bed this morning and started a fire. Indianapolis ordinance prohibits this. firefighters contained the blaze with no injuries. Later, at 869 Roosevelt Street, a gas stove burner failed and flames burst out but were put out with no damage.

Annual election planned tonight at Greene County Laymen's

The Greene County Laymen's meeting at Switz City Christian church will hold its annual election of officers tonight. A covered dish supper is at six, with the program at seven. Rev. R. N. O'Haver of Elnora will speak, and Linton members and friends are urged to attend to win the attendance banner. The note on wildlife states wild game and fur-bearing animals are state property only when taken under regulations.

Landis Named Chairman of Education and Labor Committee

Gerald W. Landis of Linton was chosen chairman of the Education and Labor Committee for the 80th Congress and named to the House Administration Committee. The Committee on Committees announced the recommendations, approved by the Republican caucus. Democrats expect to finish assignments soon. George Dorn is reported recovering satisfactorily after a fall in Indianapolis on January 1. He suffered a dislocated shoulder and fractured ribs and is in the Veterans' hospital there.
