Erno Lucas aged 44 of Linton rural route died at 9 45 AM in a fall of slate at the Little Betty mine near Dugger where he worked as a survey assistant. He is survived by a widow, three children, three brothers, a sister, and his parents. Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 PM at Welch and Cornett Funeral Home with burial in Fairview cemetery.
A westbound Pennsylvania Express derailed after striking a car at a Middleton crossing. Driver Roscoe Leveridge of New Castle was seriously injured. passenger Madalin Simpkins was killed. Two train passengers were only slightly hurt. The train continued to Chicago after the crash.
Charles Ettinger, former county clerk and ex secretary treasurer of an Indianapolis insurance firm, sues two alleged gambling houses in Indianapolis seeking $26,829 citing losses from craps and dice over the past five months. He named The Gun Club and The Spinning Wheel, detailing losses of $18,486 at the Gun Club and $10,096 at the Spinning Wheel, with rare wins. Proceedings note Indiana law allows gamblers to recover money if legal action starts within six months.
Greene county and city officials were invited by Col. Robert Rossow to a February 9 law enforcement seminar at the Greene County Courthouse Greencastle. The all day session opens at 9 am with speakers from the FBI Indiana University and Indiana State Police.

Ronald Strahle of Lewis was dismissed yesterday. Mrs Marjorie Sparks and Kha Worthington went home. Katie Lace of Lyons was yesterday. Mrs Alda Ferry of Midland was transferred yesterday to the Mary Sherman hospital at Sullivan. Robert Waskom of Worthington was dismissed today. Jules Fauvergue of Linton was dismissed today.
Lozier Ziegler was re elected president of the Greater Linton club at the new board meeting held on East Vincennes street. Clyde V. Davis was chosen vice president George Morgan secretary and Fredrick Sheppard treasurer. New directors include E C Fisk Mr Davis and B R Mc Griffin with Mayor Arthur M Grass serving ex officio. Out going directors were John Fritz Dr E V Bull and Wayne Corbin after three years service. The board also discussed plans for 1948 activities.
A district meeting of fruit growers from this part of the state will convene at 1:30 PM Thursday at the Bloomfield post office building under Greene County Extension sponsorship. Topics include new spray material insect and disease control orchard management and future outlook with informal problem discussions led by Glen Leicher Eric Sharvelle and Ben B. Sproat.

Funeral plans announced for Pfc. Bill F. Bennett 21 of Pleasantville killed in Germany October 13 1944. Services set for Thursday 2 00 pm at Mt Zion Church of Christ with Rev. Jess Michael of Vincennes. burial at Mt Moriah cemetery. Carlisle American Legion to render honors. Bennett survived by parents Oscar and Zilpha Bennett two siblings Bernice Gibbs and Hubert Bennett.
The 46 survivors from the fire gutted army coffin ship Joseph V. Connolly are in good condition after a mid Atlantic rescue. Plans and ships from Army Navy Coast Guard and Merchant Marine aided the dramatic operation. Three of the 27 aboard Union Victory require hospitalization. The Connolly valued at 2 2250000 with 5400 empty caskets and 1100000 spent on construction and conversion.
New officers for the Linton Retail Merchants association will be elected at a 6:30 PM dinner meeting at the S. and K. restaurant. The announcement urged all members to attend the event today.
Garrett B. Daubenspeck 66, longtime Switz City merchant and vice president of its bank, died at home after a period of illness. He leaves wife Elma, daughter Kathryn Frey, a granddaughter, and two brothers. Funeral services pending arrangements at Welch and Cornett in Linton.

A Eastern Airlines DC3 crashed five miles southeast of Washington during approach in heavy rain. Five people died and four were injured, all men on a Houston to Boston flight. Injured listed as in satisfactory condition at Casulty Hospital Ashington.
