Washington reports Johnson will ask Congress for extra Vietnam war funds. Estimates rise from 9–10 billion to 12–14 billion for fiscal 1967 and the total defense outlay to about 67–68 billion by June 1, amid a credibility debate.
A Bradford Pennsylvania family’s nearly 300 piece show from a 1000 item collection led by Dr. T Edward Hanley and wife Tullah opened at Huntington Hartford Gallery of Modern Art. The display spans 18th century masters to Picasso Tamayo and Buffet with works by Delacroix Daumier Ingres and more. Hanley has long donated rare books to universities and is noted as a lone wolf collector.
Mrs Bonnie E Haseman 21 of Bloomington drives in loose gravel east of Newberry at 1 p m Tuesday. She lost control over a crest, swerved off road, struck a metal culvert and posts but suffered no injuries. Sheriff investigators noted no other vehicle involved.
The 1968 Democratic gubernatorial race looms large with Rep. Richard Bodine and Lt. Gov. Robert Rock set to preside over the Assembly. Sen. Jack Mankin joins as Senate leader pro tem. Atty. Gen. Sullivan County finalizes a million two hundred thousand dollar lake and park on Morrison Creek approved by the Indiana Flood Control Commission. The multi purpose 461 acre lake will provide water retention flood control and recreation with a 12 to 14 mile shoreline and 4 to 4.5 mile length. The project is a joint effort with the Busseron Watershed Conservancy District and involves a 1300 acre park facility.
The Jasonville Volunteer Fire Department was called at 4 p.m. Tuesday to the office of Dr. Sam Rotman after boxes and magazines ignited, apparently after a furnace exploded. Firemen estimated damage at $1,000. The fire was discovered by Joe Bert Greenwood, who has an apartment above the office.
The Greene County Commission held the first meeting of the year in the county courthouse. Warren Hasler was elected president and Clyde Flory vice president. Oscar Kramer served as the other member. Discussions covered road improvements to Bloomfield areas, mining impact in Stafford township, and new road maintenance plans. The board approved a vacation and sick leave plan for highway workers, optional Blue Cross coverage, a dump truck bid, and a plan to photocopy official records. The next meeting is set for Jan 16.
Ford General Motors Chrysler and American Motors tell the safety agency they cannot meet multiple new standards for 1968 models. AMC cites eight unsatisfied rules and warns some could halt production. Haddon to issue final standards January 31 with penalties for violations.

Jasonville Mayor Gene Inman calls a special city council meeting for 6 p.m. next Monday January 9 in the Utility Office to handle routine business and announce the 1967 civic appointments including department heads and other city employees. No changes are anticipated in current organization.
Scotland Yard says $8.4 million in artworks stolen in a historic art heist were recovered Monday night. The eight pieces included three Rembrandts and three Rubens from a college gallery after a nationwide raids and inquiries across southern England.
The Legislative Advisory Committee of the Indiana Democratic State Central Committee approved a measure to lower the voting age to 19 in Indiana. They also urged passage of absentee by mail voting for in state college students and hospital confinements outside a county. Leader Gordon St Angelo hailed unanimous support and said the proposals move to General Assembly leadership for action.
A Defense Department list of 72 Vietnam casualties named three Indiana service members killed in action. They are Army Spec.4 Robert J. Hardesty of West Lafayette, Army Spec.4 Billy N. Harper of Gary, and Marine Pfc Cornel Gil of East Chicago.
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of Linton announces Miss Virginia Bucci and John Brackemyre as Greene County youth leadership contest winners from Linton-Stockton High School. Runner ups are Paula Ferry and David Greene. Local awards are given at the senior convocation in May.
