Indianapolis, Feb 28. Governor Gates pushed to outlaw strikes in public utilities but the measure failed to gain the constitutional majority in the Indiana House 45 to 38. Administration leaders promised a fresh run Monday with hopes of six more votes.
A United Press survey shows sixteen states study or consider state rent controls should federal ceilings be removed. Virginia has already passed a law allowing 15 percent increases if federal controls end. New York and New Jersey enacted rent controls last year. Minnesota drafts a 10 to 15 percent increase measure.
Funeral arrangements for Howard J. Tubby Keller aged 22 are announced. The body will move from the family home to the Local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints chapel at 11:00 AM Saturday and lie in state. Services begin at 2:00 PM with Elder Jack Oniones officiating and burial follows in Fairview Cemetery.
Eight year old Martha Henry learns her father Sgt Maurice V Henry, 29, top turret gunner, died heroically protecting his aircraft during a fire over the English Channel. Col James C Cochran pins the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously.
The Delta Alpha class of the First Christian church will meet at the home of Mrs. Harvey Grounds Tuesday evening at 7 30 o clock. All members are urged to attend.
The U S agricultural department kept 1947 soybean support prices at 2.04 dollars per bushel for green and yellow varieties and 1.84 dollars for brown black and mixed varieties to back an 11 244 000 acre harvest and 1 638 000 acre rise in plantings. The program covers U S No 2 grade with 14 percent moisture and stems from a domestic oils and fats shortage.
Funeral services for Mrs. Maude Terrell 51 of Jasonville will be held at 2 PM Saturday at the United Brethren church with Rev Zella Anthony and Rev Harley Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Lebanon cemetery. Survivors include husband Harland three sons Ray Roy and Rex Terrell two sisters Marguerite Wollam Ruth McCammon and a grandson. Mathers Funeral Home of Jasonville in charge.
Sherman Thomas of Linton died at 10 am Thursday in an Evansville hospital from complications of diseases. Born February 13, 1864 in Fort Wayne, he leaves two sons Linus and Cleo, a daughter Goldie Calloway, 23 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren. His wife Mary died in 1899 and three children predeceased him. The body rests at Welch and Cornett Funeral Home with calling hours. Funeral services are set for 2 pm Saturday at the funeral home, burial in Fairview cemetery.
Stuart K. Holcomb, former assistant to Earl Blaik at West Point, was signed to a five year contract as Purdue University head football coach. Athletic director Guy Mackey announced the decision, made by a five man faculty committee. contract terms were not disclosed.
Lt Col Robert E Thacker lands the Betty Jo at LaGuardia Field after a nonstop mission from Honolulu. The two seater plane with near empty tanks covered more than 5000 miles via the Pacific and great circle route to the U S, in 14 hours 34 minutes, averaging about 350 miles an hour. Only a few gallons of fuel remained on touchdown.
The Daily Citizen corrects an item about the annual Legion roll call breakfast at the Frank Courtney American Legion post. The breakfast is rescheduled for Sunday morning March 9 and all veterans in the area are invited to attend.
A boy named Robert Ray was born Thursday to Betty Brown of Bloomfield. A girl named Carolyn Louise was born Thursday to Eva Louis Hold of Crane. Mrs. Bonnie Bough of Switz City was admitted for medical treatment. Teddy Joyce Kirby of Bloomfield, and Mrs. Marlin Haines with baby, were discharged home Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Lena Louis of Switz City was dismissed. Mrs. Gail Carpenter and baby returned home in Switz City. Mrs. Boyd Rawley and baby in Worthington. William Carson of Worthington involved in local notices.

Mr and Mrs James McKim of Birmingham Alabama announce the birth of a son Patrick Michael born February 14 in a Birmingham hospital The father is a former resident of Linton and the mother is the former Miss Evelyn Fowle of Birmingham
A special Band Parents club meeting will be held Monday evening at 7 o clock in the local high school building. All parents are urged to attend for important business.
A last pullman car on the Sunshine Special uncoupled near the Alleghenies and sped down the grade to crash into the mountainside. Porter L Keys was killed and 11 passengers injured, with three in serious condition at Altoona hospital. Flagman Edward Mulvihill saved passengers by warning them to lie on the floor. The runaway lasted over five minutes and passed several curves before the wreck. Local rail officials reported the westbound train from New York to Texas stopped at Gallitzin tunnel to drop an extra engine before the accident.
