British Imperial troops and Indian forces defeated a Japanese offensive on the Arakan front in western Burma after a three week jungle battle. About 3,000 Japanese were killed or wounded, while British losses reached around 300. Allied air support and airlift aided ground troops amid Japanese fighter opposition.
Officials of United Mine Workers District No 11 urged Congress to select the abandoned Vigo Ordnance plant near Terre Haute as a site for one of three experimental liquid fuel plants. Louis Austin said letters were sent to Indiana senators and lawmakers Landis and Johnson seeking support for the Indiana coal field as a plant site. The bill to fund thirty million dollars for the plants passed the house and awaits Senate action.
William Singleton of West Linton underwent a major operation Friday afternoon. A baby boy named William Charles was born to Mrs. Charles L. Jaffreys on Saturday and taken home the same evening. Mrs. Cora Wilson of Linton route 3 had a minor operation Friday and was discharged Saturday. Mrs. James Goodwin of Bloomfield had a minor operation Saturday. James Riggles of Jasonville was admitted Sunday with a fractured left ankle. A boy was born Sunday to Mrs. Richard Wasnidge of Jasonville and taken home Sunday evening. Mrs. Frank Watkins of Bloomfield had a major operation Saturday night. Mrs. Gless Deckard of Lyons had a major operation this morning. Leroy Perry was admitted Sunday night. Hulee Martin of Midland was dismissed Saturday. Claude Wilson was taken to his home in Bloomfield Sunday. Mrs. Russell Landis and baby were taken to their home in South Linton this afternoon.
Bloomfield resident George Wegner died at his home early today following a prolonged illness. Born December 10, 1874, he was 69 and longtime resident of Bloomfield. A Spanish American War veteran and Moravian Church member, he is survived by Flora his widow, George Jr. his son, Christian Wegner brother, and Martha Luebke sister. Funeral services are planned for Wednesday at Jenkins Chapel with interment in Grandview Cemetery.
Albert Noah Goad age 76 died Sunday after a long illness. Born in Newberry April 5, 1863, he was the son of Ayres and Fannie Donahue Goad. Survived by two daughters Rosie Pilk and Fannie Meredith and son Alonzo Goad, all of Bloomfield. Services will be Tuesday at 2 pm at Kin s Funeral Home Bloomfield, with interment in Grand View Cemetery.
Three cases were filed in Greene Circuit Court at Bloomfield. George A. Hains sues Agnes Coen Fay Johnson and others for partition. Helen Canady seeks divorce from Earl Canady. Service Oil Co. partners Joe Willey Paul Ingersole C L Ingersole and Homer Stump sue L Z Howell doing business as Brazil Central Coal Co on account.
Washington reports Private First Class Charles Fender of Bloomington Indiana wounded in action. Navy confirms he is among 128 casualties announced to date.
The Qui Vive club meeting at Miss May Sims home tonight is postponed to March 6 as announced today.

In Bloomfield the Switz City Switzers defeated Marco 31 to 21 to capture the Greene county sectional title. They previously beat Lyons Lions Midland Middies and Linton Miners and advance to the Regional in Brazil next Saturday. Rader led Switz City with 16 points while Perigo led the Miners with five baskets and four free throws.
Mr and Mrs Clarence Jones of Fort Wayne announce the birth of a son born February 22 in Marion hospital. The baby is named Jerry. Mrs Jones is formerly Miss Virginia Cunningham daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Cunningham formerly of Linton.
Frank M. Thompson 42 of near Dugger died in a Hickory Grove mine accident around 8 30 Saturday night. He was born August 27 1901 in Sullivan County son of William P and Bertha Pirtle Thompson and lived in the Dugger area. Surviving are his widow two daughters Wanda and Myrna three brothers Glenn Jesse C and Billie Jr and three sisters Pauline Boone Agnes Reeve and Ruby Houldson. Funeral at Shiloh church Tuesday at 2 30 with burial in Dugger cemetery.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday in Worthington for Rev. J Newton Jessup pastor emeritus of Lafayette First Christian Church. He died suddenly at 78, after 50 years in ministry and 2,497 new members added during his Lafayette tenure. Survivors include his widow Effie, daughter Mildred Jessup of Drake University and son Morris Jessup of Little Rock. Interment in Worthington Cemetery.
Funeral services were held at Embery church Sunday afternoon at two o clock for Theodore Shanks 84 a Jasonville resident who died at his daughter Mrs Roy McCulloughs home in Terre Haute Friday He is survived by his daughter and son John of Sullivan Burial took place in Burris cemetery

Indiana announces a campaign to root out the black market in gasoline rationing coupons. OPA will educate drivers and conduct spot checks at stations, requiring motorists to write 1942 and 1944 license plate numbers on coupons as lists are released.
