An 800 member Tell City furniture workers local announced disaffiliation from the CIO United Furniture Workers and will join the Furniture Workers of America. President Joseph Zarrella cited opposition to Taft Hartley affidavits and UFW support for Henry Wallace as key reasons. The ex executive board narrowly approved the affidavits before deferring action.
Interest runs high as eight to nine Greene county schools enter the S H S A R tournament opener in Linton. Linton is favored after a win over Gerstmeyer while Owensburg Midland and Marco appear outside the main field. Local principal Estelle Phillips reports season ticket demand nearly exceeds supply and urges early arrival for seating.
A son was born to Mrs Alfred Moehlmann Jr weighing six pounds and named Jon Gregory. Robert Harper of Springville is admitted for medical treatment. Mrs Lucy Barton of Worthington is dismissed Tuesday. Mrs Kenny Baker and baby are home today. Mrs David Daugherty has also been dismissed.
Washington reports the United States will oppose any UN attempt to impose partition of Palestine by force. The U S supports partition as a goal and possibly a UN army to maintain peace, but rejects enforcing a political decision by force. Officials stress the UN charter limits such authority, clarifying recent statements by Warren R. Austin.
Harrison township residents outside Terre Haute will receive city fire protection for a fee of 18000. Mayor Ralph Tucker and the Board of Public Works and Safety ordered city equipment to answer calls in the township’s outskirts. Past fires near the town led to two deaths, and petitions accused the city of pressuring annexation.
Mr and Mrs Earl Mitchell of Indianapolis announce the birth of a son at Methodist hospital on February 4. The baby is named Ronnie Lee. Mrs Mitchell was formerly Lois Unger of Sullivan rural route. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Roy Mitchell of Dugger rural route one and Mr and Mrs Iven Unger of Sullivan.
Troop No 50 of Linton Boy Scouts meets at 7 30 tonight in the First Christian church Lowell Mitchell scoutmaster announced. He said important items of business would be considered.
Greene county chapter reports Stockton township raised 1685 dollars and 58 cents in the March of Dimes campaign. Township drive chairman Williams thanks contributors and the Special Gifts committee including Leonard Giuf fre and Tom Lang. County report due tomorrow.
Linton Junior High School suffers a 31 to 26 defeat at the hands of Woodrow Wilson Graders of Terre Haute. Dowdy led scoring with 13 points for the Terre Haute team while Hulman added 6. Welders’ Henkco Haworth and Wilson each scored 5 as they trailed 11-2 after the first quarter and 16-3 at halftime.
Thomas J. Creaghead of Covington Kentucky, an 1889 University of Cincinnati alumnus, remains active in campus life. He renewed his membership in the university’s 27th annual business and professional men’s group and continues weekly the current affairs forum. Creaghead is a retired head of Creaghead Engineering Co. in Cincinnati.
Three stone worker unions in Bedford Indiana rejected a new wage proposal of 1744 cent hourly raises while about 1500 workers stayed on strike in the Hoosier limestone belt. The crafts unions sought a 25 cent raise and quarry workers planned talks with 24 companies as earlier settlements reduced the number still on strike.
Rev. John Arnold a 35 year old Bloomfield pastor and two of his children Doris 11 and David 8 were killed instantly when their car was hit by a train near Perryville Kentucky. Harold Arnold survived along with Mrs Myrtle Arnold. Arnold had served at Bloomfield Wesleyan Methodist Church for two years before moving to Neon Kentucky last September.
Four men from Smith Mills Kentucky were rescued by a ferryman and harbor crew after their motor skiff capsized in flood swollen Ohio River. They clung to a willow tree as the boat overturned in the strong current while en route to care for livestock moved to high ground near Mt. Vernon Indiana. The survivors were Robert M. Grenshaw 29 Pat McAtee 26 Thomas Keelen 24 and Harold Keelen 20.
Mr and Mrs Alfred Moehlmann Jr announce the birth of a six pound son born in Freeman Greene County Hospital early this morning. The baby is named Jon Gregory. Mrs Moehlmann formerly Miss Patricia Clark daughter of Mr and Mrs Hoyt Clark. Mr Moehlmann is son of Mr and Mrs Alfred Moehlmann Sr.
President Eduard Beneṣ and Prime Minister Klement Gottwald finalized a communist backed government in Prague after mass student protests and police firing. Beneš accepted 12 non Communist ministers' resignations as Gottwald announced a new cabinet.
Leota Usrey 39, former Linton resident, died at General Hospital Pontiac Michigan at 3 am after complications from a recent operation. She moved to Pontiac about ten years ago and is survived by husband Lawrence and six children residing with their grandmother in West Linton, plus two brothers. Funeral arrangements include Pursley Funeral Home Pontiac and Aikin Funeral Home Linton with services in Pontiac and Saturday burial at Fairview cemetery.
Phil Russell and Howard Thompson emerged as doubles champions at the Linton Teen Canteen pool event by defeating Jim McCullough and Dave Richards 61 to 59. Promoters and judges included Fred Fisk Charles Fusco Stan Pershing and Bill Marshall. Winners receive silver medals. a Sunday ping pong event featuring defending champ Phil Russell is planned.
Veterans are urged to attend a government sponsored welding school meeting at the Linton American Legion hall at 7:00 p.m. Thursday. A government representative will accept applications. The school is scheduled to start soon.
County records list transfers over the past week including Maurice Gwaltney to Raymond McKee for 80 acres in Washington township and Billy R. McIntire to Marjory Greene for lot 7 in Yeoman's addition Linton. Other entries cover divisions of ownership across Richland Wright and Grant townships with multiple couples and parcels, from 12 to 14 acres, plus lots in Worthington and Jacksonville and a real estate transfer to Don Workman in Worthington.
Subcommittee backs an anti lynching bill as Truman recommends while Senate approves a temporary rent control extension to March 31. Other items note indictments in St Louis dairies on milk price fixing and a Louisiana governor election victory.
In Indianapolis on February 25 a federal judge denied the International Typographical Union’s bid to dismiss a government injunction petition. Judge Luther M. Swygert cleared the path for resumed hearings, setting March 3 to hear why the union should not be enjoined from alleged unfair labor practices. The ruling upheld Taft-Hartley section 10 (1) and allowed interlocutory relief while the core issues remain undecided.
Peggy Fry, 20, showed signs of recovery after Terre Haute firemen used a portable iron lung for 13 hours when her breathing collapsed following a basketball game. Her parents expressed gratitude as doctors credited the firemen with saving her life.
The State Department of Conservation announced plans to remove the closed season on bluegill crappies redcar sunfish rock bass and yellow perch. A public hearing on the discretionary order will be held in Indianapolis March 8. If no objections are raised the department will move to repeal the closed season citing excess fish in Indiana waters from a lake and stream survey.
