Reinforced U.S. Marines closed to within 200 yards of Iwo Jima's central airdrome amid fierce Japanese resistance. Reports say 40,000 Marines faced about 20,000 Japanese as the invasion entered its fourth day. Tokyo broadcasts claim heavy Allied losses and that a third division was brought in.
Mrs Loretta Shepard was notified by the War Department that her husband Pfe Robert F Shepard was killed in action in Germany on February 3 while with the 3rd Army. He was 29 and had been overseas eleven months. Survivors include his widow a son a set of parents two sisters and a brother. This marks the 26th Linton area loss in World War II.
Farmers may apply for emergency crop and feed loans through the Agricultural Adjustment Administration in Greene County to finance vital war crops and livestock. Carter H. Holland will assist at Bloomfield on February 28 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Loans require first lien security, 4 percent interest, and target landowners and tenants unable to secure credit elsewhere.

F. J. Sadler of the White River Council of Boy Scouts met a Women’s Council committee at Mrs. Karl Aikin’s home on Wednesday to organize cub dens. Attendees included Mesdames Lun Kramer Dogie Freund Tubby and Miss Gladys Mitchell.
Soviet forces under Marshal Ivan Konev drive along a 60 mile front southeast of Berlin to cross the Neisse and threaten the city from the south east. Konev reaches the Oder confluence near the Neisse and captures Kuschern as Guben and Cottbus area defenses brace against a wider breakthrough.
Maj Walter N Marlin of Los Angeles was acquitted of neglect of duty in connection with wholesale looting by his 716th Railway Battalion. He announced his resignation. Prosecutor Lt Col Harris criticized the army’s railway system and called for reform. Marlin, 54, said he joined after writing the War Department about his railway experience.
Naomi Boruff, 12, daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank Boruff of Bloomfield, underwent an appendectomy Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Mollie Manual of Jasonville admitted for treatment Wednesday night. Mrs Alice Smith of Worthington underwent a major operation today. Deloris Carpenter, 10, daughter of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Carpenter of Bloomfield, had a tonsillectomy this morning. Mrs Robert O Greenwood of Crane submitted to major surgery this afternoon. Miss Barbara Coulter discharged Wednesday. Ronnie Lou Barnes taken to her home Wednesday afternoon.
Miss Gertrude East a retired Lin ton school teacher died in Freeman Greene county hospital after a three week illness She was born February 27 1874 in Greene County and was 70 years 11 months and 26 days She taught in Linton Worthington and Indianapolis and later resided in Indianapolis where she fell ill She was active in the Worthington Methodist church She is survived by a sister Mrs Josephine Akre of Linton a brother O R East of Worthington a nephew Robert Akre of Linton a niece Hyla Jean Gelelman of New York and a great nephew Phil Akre of Linton The body is at Myers Funeral Home Worthington with services Sunday at 2 p m Burial in Worthington cemetery.
Mrs Arle Bucher wife of Guy Bucher of Worthington died at Freeman Greene county hospital after a three month illness. She was born February 22 1881 in Highland township and aged 63 years 11 months 29 days. Survived by husband David Owen a son David of Maywood NL two brothers Carl and Fred Owen and a granddaughter Patricia Ann Bucher. Body to Myers Funeral Home Worthington with services Friday at two o'clock and burial in Starcup Cemetery.
Mrs. Francis Haseman announced today that more funds are needed to meet the March 1 goal for soldier kits. Linton’s allotment was $150 but only $59 has been received, leaving a $91 deficit. Community groups or individuals may donate by contacting Mrs. Haseman at 479-J.

Mrs. Geneva Colvin of Dugger reports that her husband Pfe. Howard Colvin has been wounded again in combat. The 27 year old is the son of J. P. Colvin of Linton. He was wounded on February 12 in Germany and is hospitalized in France. Details of injuries are not available.
Indiana Society for Crippled Children begins statewide fundraising with March 1 campaign. County groups coordinate efforts to raise money for services to physically handicapped people through one dollar seal sheets mailed to Hoosier residents. The 100000 contributor mark from last year reflects broad support.
