An Americanization meeting of the pro Nazi German American Bund drew 18 000 attendees and ended with swastika salutes and a Nazi anthem. Police fought anti Nazi crowds outside for six hours as clashes occurred but no serious injuries. Thirteen arrests including Isidore Greenbaum who rushed the platform and was beaten by Bund members.
A dozen navy pursuit planes circled Pensacola naval training station for five hours in dense fog hoping for a landing window. When fuel ran out seven aircraft crashed. one pilot died and another plane was missing. Five single seaters landed safely in northwest Florida and southeast Alabama. most crew parachuted to safety.
Abner Nelson a 38 year old bachelor farmer vanished from his model farm four miles north of Morris. Evidence of a scuffle and a pool of blood in the driveway led Sheriff Hoyt to suspect foul play. Nelson's brother Sidney found the car and house unlocked and notified authorities after finding the scene.
Edwardsport Indiana February 21 Mrs Leo O Dell recovering from facial cuts shock and bruises after a WPA passenger truck collided with a sedan on state road 67 The sedan driven by Raymond Clear land struck the truck rear end while a school bus body was on the truck Mr O Dell his wife and three children and Bud Carnahan were present but only Mrs O Dell was injured

The Union Central Life Insurance Company sues William M Snider Henry Boisen and Mable Boisen for note and mortgage foreclosure. Paul R Loffland files for divorce from Rose Loffland. Temple G Pierson sues Sarah K Conant estate administrator W W A for claims. Folsom Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church of Worthington sues the Conant estate. Frank Brumett of Springville and Pauline Lavera Porter of Owensburg receive a marriage license.
Maurice Dale Branstetter nineteen year old son of Luther and Zula Branstetter of four miles north of Bloomfield died Monday of pneumonia after a nine day illness. Born June 28 1919 in Robison he lived there until age eight then moved to near Bloomfield. Survived by parents two sisters Evelyn Ruth Esther and brother Marvin Leslie and maternal grandparents Jesse Crowe and Nora Ellen Branstetter with grandmother of Bloomfield. Funeral at Mt Zion church Wednesday at 2 pm Rev Rowe in charge burial Walnut Grove cemetery Kidd Undertaking Bloomfield in charge
Mrs. Geraldine Curtis, wife of Sam Curtis and former Linton resident, died at 8 a m Sunday in Pontiac Michigan. She is survived by a brother and by her father and mother and mother in law Mrs Joyce Maggie Curtis. Funeral arrangements not yet received here.
The holiday schedule closes the postoffice and banks in Lirton and Greene counties Wed nesday. Outgoing mail will be dispatched and lock box service provided, but no window service will be available to patrons.
Greene County commissioners designated banks to hold public funds. Bloomfield State Bank receives four thirty-fifths, Citizens State Bank of Bloomfield eleven one-hundred-and-fortieths, Peoples Trust Company of Linton seventeen thirty-fifths, Worthington State Bank ten percent, and Citizens National Bank of Linton nine thirty-fifths. Switz City Bank and Peoples Trust Company of Linton chosen for clerk of Greene Circuit Court funds. Joseph B. Megner of Worthington reappointed to the county alcoholic beverages board for another year. Depositories chosen after reviewing bank proposals under Indiana law.
Mrs John Mitchell was taken to her home on Eighth street southeast today after a hospital visit.
The Grand theatre at 80 90 A street northeast was sold by Linton Moose lodge members to George Settos of Indianapolis, partner in a chain of movie houses. He plans extensive remodeling starting April with hopes to reopen by fall 1939. The Moose lodge will keep club rooms on the building’s upper floors. Settos and partners run theatres in Indianapolis Louisville and New Albany.
An owl driven by hunger flew down a vacant cottage chimney in Madison, knocked over a shelf of books and chewed parts of the table top curtains and shades. The startled owner Edward Holway described it as looking like a team of horses had charged through. The owl was found dead on the floor.
Paris telegraphs that negotiations for recognizing Nationalist Spain are to close tomorrow. A final meeting between French envoy Senator Leon Berard and officials is to be held at Burgos under good conditions. France and Britain may grant recognition by week end without written guarantees on troops withdrawal or Republican clemency.
Japanese planes attacked the Canton Hong Kong railroad today killing a British Indian policeman. In Madrid reports say Nationalist air raiders dropped thirty bombs on central Alicante at 11 10 a m causing seven deaths and eighteen houses destroyed.
Jimmie Mears a 15 year old boy confessed to fourteen burglaries and two attempted robberies in Linton over three weeks. He stole a .45 pistol from Sarmont filling station and sold it for sixteen cents. Police praised local cooperation and noted the case closed after the arrest and confession despite limited manpower.
Reported escape from a state prison by a desperate inmate as authorities investigate the breach. The incident adds to security concerns amid ongoing corrections scrutiny.
Mrs Flora V Smallwood 67 a lifelong Sullivan county resident died Monday night at Mary Sherman hospital Sullivan after a month long illness. Survived by sons John S Smallwood Eugene Smallwood and daughters Emma B McClure Bennavista McCammon. Service 3 pm Wednesday at Longs Chapel Church with Rev Askins. Burial at Longs Chapel cemetery. Body to M J Aikin Son Funeral Home Dugger then home to Eugene Smallwood Sullivan route 3.
Funeral services for Ada Bell Workman aged 64 a Tulip resident were held today at the Tulip church with burial in Tulip cemetery. She leaves three brothers Melvin Park Addison and Daniel Workman Bloomfield and five sisters Lillie Ray Solsberry Dora Hash Bloomfield Ross Arthur Spencer Florence Rainbolt Tulip and Dora Orman Missouri.

Michigan City authorities searched the prison after Paul Pierce, a 29 year old life term convict, vanished during a routine check at 5 p m. The hunt was suspended at midnight with guards kept on standby and state police alerted. Pierce was sentenced in 1950 for automobile banditry and in 1935 for the murder of Indianapolis officer Orville Quinette.
Indiana lawmakers move two election bills toward passage. One creates separate judicial state conventions for selecting major party nominees for supreme and appellate court judges, limited to 100 delegates per state. The other, a Republican measure, would notify voters if their names near removal for not voting and require party chairmen receive a list of registered voters before primaries or general elections. The convention plan reshapes delegate redistribution.
A special committee appointed by the Indiana Supreme Court recommends retaining the current bar examinations for admission to practice.
