A 12 year old Coalmont pupil, John Edward Gorby, was killed when he ran in front of a northbound car on State Road 159 near Coalmont. Coroner Oscar Weddel ruled the death accidental and absolved the driver Harold Thomas of blame. The boy, born May 28 1946 in Brazil, was to attend a Midland Coalmont Grade School game. funeral arrangements were set for Coalmont Church of God with burial in Hymera K of P cemetery.
Elmer Davidson, 61, of Sullivan, sole survivor of the City Mine explosion that killed 31 men, marked the 34th anniversary by running his grocery business. He was the only survivor in the area when a gas explosion hit the 295 foot shaft on Feb 20, 1925. His injuries were severe but he recovered and worked as a miner until 1940, expressing affection for mines and miners who helped build Sullivan.
Dr. Glen O'Dell of Bedford will preach at Burris Chapel Evangelical United Brethren church Sunday morning. He will lead the local conference session after worship. Rev. Elva Hardy urges church members to attend.

Reverend David Shepherd delivers his farewell at First Methodist in town after six years of service. He and wife Mrs Shepherd relocate to Aurora by Indiana Conference. Their son Danny, a Linton Stockton graduate, is now a freshman at Indiana University. A youth service at 7 pm precedes an 8 pm social in the church lower auditorium. James E Robertson 79 died at 4 45 this morning at his son Ralph Robertson’s home 759 Fourth Street NW after weeks of illness He was born December 18 1879 in Sullivan County a retired farmer and coal miner He moved to Linton three years ago He is survived by son Ralph two brothers a sister two grandchildren and two great grandchildren The body was taken to Newkirk Funeral Home Dugger and will be returned to Ralph’s home at 6 PM for viewing Burial will be at Woodward Cemetery after service at Shiloh Church of Christ near Dugger Sunday at 2 PM.
General of the Army George C. Marshall, 78, battling pneumonia and two strokes, showed slight improvement but remained in serious condition at Womack General Hospital in Fort Bragg. Doctors cautioned against over-optimism as pneumonia continued to complicate treatment.
Indiana lawmakers approved 82-3 a bill sent to the Senate to expand shooting preserves. It adds quail chukar partridges and certain ducks to hunt on preserves, extends season to March 31, and imposes a $100 license fee for owners controlling preserves of 1,200 to 640 acres.

INDIANAPOLIS UPI A bill to transfer patronage control of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles from the Republican governor to the Democratic secretary of state advances to a final House vote. The measure faces a party line dispute over the effective date and comes as unemployment benefits expansion gains momentum in the Senate. The session also sees two House bills sent to Governor Handley for signature, including a Youth Council and a night-light requirement for hunters.
The Atlas ICBM malfunctioned and exploded early today at Cape Canaveral during a planned 4300 mile test hop to the South Atlantic. The Air Force reported the 100 ton missile disintegrated after booster engines separated and plunged into the ocean.

A noon Thursday fire at the J. L. Wilson Lumber Co. shop on East Judson Street in Bloomfield, caused by an exploding oil stove, caused about 1000 dollars in damage. Vernon Carroll was inside the shop when it exploded but escaped with only the tools he could grab as flames spread. Fire Chief Paul York estimated the damage and Bloomfield firefighters brought the blaze under control, with tools, building materials, storm windows, and doors among the losses.

The body of M. Sgt. Ralph Scherer, 40, Noblesville Indiana, son of Mr and Mrs John Scherer, was found near wreckage of a small plane on a California mountain peak. He crashed during a storm while flying from Edwards AFB to Van Nuys. Civil Air Patrol crews located the wreckage.
A civil action was filed in Greene Circuit Court Bloomfield by Paper Mate Company against Tunis Hudson on a complaint on open account for 3100 dollars.
