Howard Eugene Stangle aged 32, son of the DeMotte school principal, died in an ambulance en route to a hospital after collapsing with a heart attack following a game at Pu'talo High School gym. He had played with an independent basketball team.
The flood swollen Wabash River formed a 35 mile by 14 mile lake flooding thousands of acres in Illinois and Indiana. Mount Carmel reported 24.5 feet with 75 homes damaged and 8 to 10 families seeking refuge on upper floors as crest neared 25 feet. Indiana areas near Vincennes faced less severe impact while levees held along the river.
A fire at Ayera McCarel Clay Co near Brazil Indiana caused about 200000 dollars in damage. The plant at five miles north of Brazil was closed for remodeling and employed about 50 workers. Firefighters from Brazil Rockville and township contained the blaze, leaving only the heating plant and a storage building.
Carl Reiselt an 18 year old convict who escaped the Indiana Reformatory was captured in Illinois after he hijacked a police car and fled. He carried a pistol a rifle and ammunition from a burglary in Tuscola and had been sentenced to ten years for armed robbery and auto banditry. Deputy Sheriff Eugene Miller tackled him during the arrest.
Members of the Linton Elks lodge and their escorts look forward to the 1959 annual Washington Birthday Party at the local lodge hall. The event starts at 6 30 p m with a smorgasbord dinner and dancing in the ballroom. Strolling musicians will entertain in the Mandarin room.
A man identified as Richard Alston 44 was arrested after a bomb scare at Capital Airlines in Atlanta and a New York bag left behind yielded 51 heroin packages valued about half a million dollars. Police found voodoo items and a switchblade on Alston whom officials say had no knowledge of the suitcase. The ticket was bought for him by a man named W Hatchett.
Six experts forecast major breakthroughs against heart and blood vessel disease within ten years. They cited a decade of progress by the American Heart Assn and the National Heart Institute and urged cautious optimism about future large scale prevention and lives saved. Dr. Leroy Burney urged careful pace while Dr. Howard B. Sprague highlighted gains already saving thousands.
The Heart Fund drive for Lyons and Washington township will occur Monday Feb 23. Sponsored by the Lyons Social and Benevolent Club. Mrs Ovid Her chairs and urges residents to contribute generously.
Mrs Alden Tucker was admitted to Union Hospital in Terre Haute today for a week of observation and treatment.
In Elliston, White river flood waters crest at 25 feet last Friday and sit at 18.20 feet this morning. Weather Observer M. E. Brock says Wabash flood delays return to normal levels in Greene County as precipitation includes snow rain sleet and hail. Temperatures range from six degrees above zero to 27 with 10 above at 8 am.
Leonard Mason, 40, captured near Winslow after a gun battle at the Glendale home of Jazz musician Johnny Zorro. Mason admitted killing Zorro’s mother in law and wounding Zorro’s wife Rona Lor raine during the shootout that left Mrs Jamerson dead and Mrs Porrazzo near death. Nine shots were exchanged as the assailant fled to a roadblock on U S Highway 66.

A civil action is placed on file in Greene circuit court at Boom field. Commercial Credit Corp sues John Andrew Burch seeking recovery of goods under the complaint filed.
Rep. Daniel A. Reed, longest-serving Republican in Congress, dies at Walter Reed Army Medical Center at age 83 after 14 weeks of treatment for an infected foot. A senior Ways and Means member, Reed championed high tariffs and low taxes, clashing with President Eisenhower.
President Eisenhower, braving rain and snow, flies from Washington to Acapulco for a two day informal meeting with Mexico’s President Adolfo Lopez Mateos. He rests overnight at Bergstrom AFB after a 2200 mile journey and plans a lunch aboard Lopez Mateos’s yacht before continuing to Augusta, Georgia, for a golf weekend.
Ralph Belval aged 47 of Bloomington Illinois, formerly of Linton, died Wednesday after a heart attack. He is survived by his wife Felicia and daughter Sharon of Bloomington, his parents of Springfield, two sisters, a brother, an aunt in Linton, and several cousins. Burial will be in Springfield.
In Bedford Indiana two 20 year old twins from Columbus were sentenced to prison terms of one to three years for child desertion connected to abandoning Mrs Bartie Hendrickson's four month old boy on February 8. Judge Chester A. Davis suspended Mrs Scroggins' sentence.
A dense fog paralyzes transport across 25 counties from the Channel to the Midlands. London airport and rail service are crippled as cars clog highways and ships await rescue near the Queen Elizabeth liner. No casualties reported amid grounding and ship collisions.

In Front Royal the first day of Warren County High sees 42 Negro students and 10 teachers in 30 classrooms under federal orders. Fourteen girls and eight boys register as the only Black pupils. white students stay in downtown private schools. Principal Gasque says the million dollar high school can operate with a small faculty and all Negro enrollment, but efficiency is uncertain.
A license is issued allowing Miss Norma Linton clerk of the Greene circuit court at Bloomfield to the marriage of John Paul Liechty of Clay City and Emma Jeane Law of Linton.
Winter chills grip Hoosierland as temperatures fall near zero in many cities. Lafayette reports three above zero, South Bend Fort Wayne and Indianapolis five above, Evansville thirteen. Snow amounts include five inches in South Bend and two in Fort Wayne, with flood crests along the Wabash moving downstream.
Thomas Harry Johnston 54 of Lafayette wins a new trial after Fountain Circuit Judge Roy C. Penters orders one for April 29. Johnston was condemned to death for the October 1957 shotgun killing of Attica hotel maid Vida Mae Foxworthy after arguing juror kinship to the victim. The Supreme Court had delayed his execution previously.
M Sgt Ralph Scherer 40 of Noblesville Indiana, son of Mr and Mrs John Scherer, Noblesville, missing after leaving Edwards AFB in a light private plane bound for Van Nuys California. Weather hazards feared to have downed the craft. he belonged to the Edwards AFB Aero-Club and his wife Gwen resides at Edwards.
The South Indiana District quarterly conference will be held at the Linton Branch Chapel Sunday with two sessions at 10 30 am and 2 90 pm. Reuel E. Christensen and the Great Lakes Mission staff will be principal speakers. The public is invited.
A Montpelier city sand truck stopped suddenly on ice coated roads to prevent skidding and was hit by a following car causing $200 in damages. No injuries were reported.

About 5,000 riflemen from Chad joined efforts amid clashes in squalid outskirts. At least 54 people killed and around 100 injured this week, with white residents reportedly unharmed.
Army doctors report a slight spread of pneumonia complicating Gen. George C. Marshall's second stroke. Col. George M. Powell says there is no great change in Marshall's condition and that pneumonia treatment has increased with penicillin and chloramphenicol.
