At a recent board meeting the Linton-Stockton United Fund wrestled with whether to keep a $2000 emergency fund in annual drives. A committee, led by Jack Wheeler, will craft a workable emergency definition. Fire department planning for disasters and hospital evacuation was discussed.
A Netherlands safety expert invented safety pants attached to the car seat allowing a child to stand or sit. Medical World News reports the pants may be more efficient than a seat belt. The design distributes collision force along the vertebral column.
Aviatrix Joan Merriam Smith, who followed a world flight route similar to Amelia Earhart, died with passenger Trixie Ann Schubert when their borrowed Cessna 180 crashed into a San Gabriel Mountain near Wrightwood California. The two were en route from Long Beach to Wrightwood and the wreckage burned in brush.
MEDARYVILLE Ind Three of four inmates from Jasper Pulaski game preserve youth camp who beat a guard and stole his car to escape early Wednesday are back in custody. Two were nabbed near here by Cass County Sheriff’s deputies. the third, 20 year old Edward Finchum, was captured by Muncie police. The men, Ronnie Smith Gerald Camden both 19 captured near Clymers, faced prior felony entering sentences from Wayne and Delaware counties. The four had raided the office and commissary before fleeing, and officials said they attempted to kill the guard but an automatic door trapped him.
Local readings show Wednesday high at 47 degrees and last night’s low of 26. At 7 30 am today, no precipitation detected. River stage recorded at 11 38 and falling.
In Saigon a Hanoi radio report claimed four U S and South Vietnamese ships shelled a coastal installation and withdrew after a clash with Communist patrol boats. Gradis Hamilton 37 and Norman Flynn Jr. were given suspended sentences revoked on earlier paroles. John Chapman 46 drew 5 to 20 years for selling narcotics after a Minneapolis man testified he bought heroin capsules. The witness also signaled more indictments against other Lake County dealers.

Goldstone station sent the go signal to activate stored commands, as the craft 99,281 miles from Earth moves toward the lunar target at about 4100 miles per hour. scientists will study telemetry to confirm success.
A double fatality in Newton County Indiana 55 near Thayer raises Hoosier traffic deaths to at least 153 this year versus 118 a year ago. Victims David L. Hass 19 DeMotte driver and Charles R Sudickis 25 Thayer were in a car that swerved struck a pole and tree near a curve at 4 am. Leo Nix 66 Columbia City died Tuesday at Parkview Hospital Fort Wayne from injuries Jan 30 in a collision involving a car and a big truck on US 30.
Peoples Trust Company of Linton announced the election of Fred W. Otten as Executive Vice President. A New York native, he previously worked at American Fletcher National Bank and Trust Co. of Indianapolis since 1954, serving as teller, branch manager, and an executive. He has studied at the American Institute of Banking and has been active in Indianapolis civic affairs. The Otten family plans to move to Linton when suitable housing is found.
About 300 Negro teenagers protesting school segregation swarmed a crowded New York shopping center today smashing store windows and terrorizing shoppers and shopkeepers. Police moved to restore order as the crowd dispersed with several arrests reported.
Albania pressed for a General Assembly vote to challenge U S and Soviet voting rights over unpaid UN debts. The assembly recessed as Albania demanded a vote, with off stage talks likely to settle the issue while threatening budget and ECOSOC post appointments.
Public information is the subject as the Justice Department works on proposed new standards governing what U S attorneys can publish about defendants before trial. A department official said about 15 draft versions exist and no final decision is made. The issue traces to the Warren Commission remarks on Dallas and Oswald, with a congressional push led by Rep. Rex Buskirk of Worthington, 32, was arrested after a Wednesday afternoon crash near the Eel River Bridge on highway 67. The Jasonville Chamber of Commerce elected officers at a meeting at Formfit cafe ter ia Wednesday night. Earl Row was named president, George Williams and George Croft vice presidents, Bob Cox secretary, and Jack Ridinger treasurer. Elected to the board were Loren Buell John Brewer Max McClanahan Fred Bennett and Keith Kester. Several projects for the coming year were discussed during the business session.
Motor vehicle owners have one week left to obtain 1965 license plates. February 28 is the last day 1964 plates are lawful. The Linton Branch of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles will be open daily next week including George Washington's Birthday to accommodate those without plates. IT-40 tax forms are available at the license branch.
Three new cases filed in Bloomfield Tuesday list Daviess County Hospital versus Robert and Eloise Emmons for account, Pacific Finance Loans versus Betty K. Young formerly Betty K. Rollins on note, and Hayes Motor Supply Inc. versus Indiana Oxygen Co. Mike Fleener and Paul Baker for damages, venued from Lawrence County.
Indiana enjoys calm winter days with no precipitation for five straight days in Indianapolis. Fair to partly cloudy skies expected through Saturday with highs from 32 to 50 and overnight lows in the 20s. Temperatures show little change with Friday highs around the mid 40s to 50s in southern areas.
