Benjamin Jender, 38, sat through mass at St John Cathedral then fatally shot himself in a front pew moments after police hunted him for killing his estranged wife. The 29 year old woman had filed for divorce. their 15 year old daughter witnessed the scene. A single .32 caliber revolver was used.
Samuel Pierce 69 of Lawrence county confessed to killing neighbor Earl Roach 41 in Bedford area. He described waylaying Roach, shooting him, bludgeoning him, then slitting his throat to bleed to death amid a long running family feud. The statement linked to fingerprints on a four foot club.
Linton high school meets New Albany on their floor in a pivotal IHS AA cage clash. New Albany is rated among state leaders while Linton battles to end a disappointing season after a long road trip. A handful of local fans plan to travel to New Albany for the Friday night game.
Indianapolis chief of detectives said William Ray Butsch, a middle aged woman and former convict, will be formally charged with the murder of Mrs Carrie Selah Romig. Detectives report he was in the Romig apartment on the day and the day before the slaying and the case is being built for a grand jury.
A son born this morning to Mrs. Leo Cunningham of Linton route 1. The baby weighs six pounds fifteen ounces and is named Morris Dale. Mrs. Lloyd Lynn of Bloomfield route 4 underwent a major operation this morning.
Sixty two pupils at Linton Stockton high school were absent due to flu with more cases reported in grade schools. Indiana sees broad fever illness with attendances falling state wide. Dr. Herman G. Morgan warns of over twenty five thousand potential influenza pneumonia cases in Indianapolis this winter. Sullivan schools report rising attendance as students return recovered, with no immediate shutdown planned.
Mrs. W. C. Perkins of North Main street entertained several friends from Bicknell at her home Wednesday. Guests included Mesdames Earl Andersen Arthur Lister Elmer Ramsey Robert Nelson Forest Evans John Mc Clure Ewell Phillipe Ralph Anderson and Joel Wampler.
A large turnout of Linton merchants and professionals is expected for the first banquet of the Linton Retail Merchants' Association at 6 30 Friday evening at the First Methodist church. H E Zander handles reservations by noon Friday and Murray H Morris of the Indianapolis Retail Merchants Association will speak, with Morris described as an authority on merchandising and business organizations.
Funeral services for Elza T. Jennicks, 62, who died Tuesday night, will be held at 3 PM Friday in the home of Mrs. Harvey Laughlin on State Road 59 in South Linton, with Rev. Sam Tuttle presiding. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. The son Frank Jennicks of Mishawaka, a former well known football player here and at Indiana University, arrived in Linton.
President Roosevelt asked Congress to study the nation’s energy resources to draft a national policy for their use and conservation. He also proposed an integrated federal state program to reduce water pollution, in messages tied to the National Resources Committee reports.
Indiana lawmakers withdraw strip mine regulation bill to rewrite for constitutionality. Knox representative C Omer Free introduced the measure which would level spoil banks every sixty days, with opposition forming in Bicknell and Linton as local groups circulate petitions to block passage next term.
Harold Katz of Terre Haute won first prize in the state wide Rotary club contest group district held at the First Christian church. Chester Stoeckel of Linton took second, John T. Harbaugh of Sullivan third. Katz will advance to the district meet Feb 22 at French Lick then possibly the state final. The event awarded Katz the Luke Walton trophy. judges praised the trio’s abilities.
Speaker Knapp sided with Democrats as Republicans failed to force Gov Townsend to disclose state employee names. The House rejected the list resolution after Townsend warned it would cost 10000 and take 60 days. Bills proposed would ban picketing at businesses, train prison guards, curb underage liquor sales, create magistrates courts, require free textbooks, and repeal an unemployment relief commission act.
Thomas Pinkney Freeman 83 former Worthington resident died Wednesday morning at his son’s Tulsa Oklahoma home. He is survived by Emma Freeman of Ft Ritner two daughters Daisy Davis Worthington Lola Johnson Miami three sons Russell Floyd and Dennis Freeman twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The body will arrive Worthington Friday and funeral will be Saturday at 10 from Myers Funeral Home with Rev Ray Bridwell Worthington Baptist Church officiating burial in Worthington Cemetery.
The United Press reports a third severe cold wave in the Midwest while eastern states face floods fog and heavy rains from a major coast storm. Bemidji Minnesota records 43 degrees below zero as Minnesota and North Dakota chill to 30 40 below. The storm center shifts to northern New England with 65 mph winds and one death in New Brunswick New Jersey. Two people die in Pinson Alabama. Chicago temperature sinks to near zero then rises from 10 above to 24 by morning.
Merchants from ten northeastern Indiana counties prepared to pressure the state legislature in Indianapolis. About 400 merchants from Allen, Whitley, Huntington, DeKalb, Noble, Miami and Steuben counties joined pledges from Adams, Kosciusko and Wells counties. They urged a tax strike until the levy drops to one quarter of one percent while keeping the $3,000 exemption. They also planned to attend the public hearing on the resolution before the legislature.
Secretary Morgenthau testified that government aid to a French air mission buying American planes came at the president's request. Gen Malin Craig opposed the U S role but was overruled by higher authorities. Woodring and Morgenthau testified on a French air ministry officer aboard a crash damaged experimental bomber off the Pacific coast.
