It contrasts with today’s doctors still devoted yet freer from past trials and mentions New York laundries and nursery rhymes driving midweek wash days. It ends with a humorous dental tale and a wry note on out of town advertising.
Linton Elks Lodge will initiate a class of candidates during its regular Wednesday night meeting attended by Sullivan B P O E lodge members. The initiation will be performed by the state champion ritualistic degree team followed by a buffet lunch. The session starts at 8 p.m.
Washington February 15. The House Appropriations Committee backed a 250 million dollar supplemental relief bill to fund 750000 Works Progress Administration jobs through June. The measure seeks swift Senate action and presidential signature this weekend to cover 750000 families. WPA projections show rolls rising to 2500000 next month without funds and falling to 1800000 by June, with a planned monthly reduction of 100000.
Assistant Attorney General Robert H. Jackson pressed a Senate judiciary subcommittee on his anti business rhetoric with a pledge to stand by every word of his criticism of trusts and monopolies. Administration advisers met with Secretary Morgenthau to discuss a potential $4 billion expansion of credit and the commodity price structure was examined at the Treasury gathering.
The Linton junior high Welders host Pleasantville Graders in a two game bill at the Linton Stockton gymnasium. The B game starts 7 pm and the A game follows at 8 pm as the Welders seek their fifteenth win of the 1937 38 season.
In Eagle Rock California a housewife suspected of using diamonds as a hash ingredient is linked to a ring stone missing from her finger. The diamond escaped during hash preparation and surfaced when her husband bit into the finished product.
The third rank work for the Governor's class of Knights of Pythias will be conferred by a Greene county team chosen from K P lodges. Indiana grand lodge official Paul Hunter announced the event and transportation to Marion on February 28.
The National Bituminous Coal Commission vows a strong fight against injunct ion suspending its minimum price structure and will probe profiteering by some retail coal dealers. Commissioner Maloney says public attention should focus on dealers using minimum prices to raise household coal costs. Chairman Hisford says no suspension of prices and a plan to oppose court attempts to invalidate regulatory orders.
High Commissioner Paul V. McNutt will land in San Francisco aboard the Hawaii Clipper and proceed to Washington to present a Philippine conditions report to President Roosevelt. The trip mirrors Carlos Romulo’s recent talks with the President. Pan American Airways notes Romulo booked a Manila return on March 9 via the China Clipper.
Governor M. Clifford Townsend said no changes were contemplated at the Indiana State Prison following a jailbreak by five convicts last week. He noted only recommendations from Thurman A. Gottschalk, state institutions superintendent, would be adopted.
U S Marines blocked two Japanese patrols from entering the American defense sector of the International Settlement in Shanghai. Earlier a patrol sought entry amid an angry morning argument, four Japanese men withdrew after refusal. An armed eight man patrol returned later and also failed to gain entry.
Frank Barnhart of Terre Haute will speak at the Twin Safety Chapter banquet in Linton. Banquet at 6 30 p m includes blessing by Rev B H Bruner. Mayor Bull gives welcome, with Ferguson deputies and Templeton as speakers. Prizes and a program of music and entertainment planned. large attendance expected.
Mrs Jeremiah C Palmer celebrated her 57th wedding anniversary by frying doughnuts in a kettle believed to be 100 years old for her husband Mr and Mrs Palmer are 79 years old.
Minneapolis police take 5 year old piano prodigy Nancy Tripp under their wing and plan to send her to Hollywood for opportunities.
Local Methodist ministers from several Greene County areas gathered at the Nola D. Yoder Community House in Linton. A luncheon followed morning sessions with valentine cards. The afternoon program on Christian Experience featured Rev. Meredith and speakers Rev. Foutz and Rev. Gray. Plans for a county-wide gathering in Chicago were discussed, potentially moving to Linton on Feb 24 if approved.
Ola Houldson of West Linton is in Grene county jail on burglary charges after confessing to the Ward Padgett filling station robbery in West Linton. Rex Starkey of Linton is detained awaiting charges as authorities pursue burglar accusations, tied to the same incident. About $20 was stolen. The pair allegedly pried a window at the Padgett residence behind the station on state road 54. Police and sheriff units pursued Starkey, who was later apprehended in Bloomfield per a Jasper state radio notification.
Virginia Ruth Moore 15 daughter of Lewis M and Stella B Moore died Monday afternoon. Born Feb 22 1923 in Dixon Station Greene county she was editor of the freshman class newspaper and active in Switz City Christian church. Surviving parents siblings and relatives listed. Funeral at 2 pm Wednesday at the family home with Rev George Wildman officiating. Burial in Worthington cemetery.
President Roosevelt paid tribute to Rear Admiral Cary T. Grayson longtime Red Cross chairman and presidential confidante. Grayson died at his home from anemia with acute respiratory infection at age 559. Roosevelt called him an outstanding humanitarian and staunch friend and praised his work as physician and Red Cross executive.
Moscow officials announced plans to construct sixty new schools in 1938, each conceived to house 880 students. The project aims to expand educational capacity in the city.
About 2000 Indiana Democrats plan a rally at the Indiana Democratic Editorial association winter meeting to back former Gov Paul V McNutt for president. McNutt, U S high commissioner to the Philippines, flies from Manila to report to F D Roosevelt on Oriental affairs and will visit Bloomington to discuss Indiana University presidency.
Judge J Raymond Powell and John P O Donnell spoke at the Greene County Bar Association mid winter banquet in Bloomfield. Toastmaster Oscar R Shields presided as guests from Linton Bloomfield Jasonville and Bloomington attended with musical performances by local artists.
Mrs J Frank Taylor and newborn son at 1050 East Vincennes street are reported satisfactory. Emma Michael of Salsberry was admitted for a major operation. Mrs Frank Sharon of Bloomfield underwent a major operation. Mrs Roberta Jackson of Jasonville admitted this morning. Mrs John Elkins of Contine Mich underwent an emergency operation last night. Mrs Elkins formerly Miss Fern Pritchard is reported satisfactory. Vernon Moore’s condition is reported to be improved.
Crowds gather along the concrete flood wall as the Grand River advances toward a 1904 scale crest. Emergency measures are set as the river climbs 13 feet and is rising about 0.1 foot per hour, with peak expected Thursday afternoon.
Funeral services were held Sunday in Michigan for Mary Nancy Miller Gibson 59 a former Greene county resident who died Friday at Ford Hospital Detroit. She was a registered nurse and wife of Howard Gibson of Detroit. Surviving relatives include sisters Lena Titus Linton Bertha Fordyce Calvertsville and brother Frank Miller Decatur with other relatives. The Dearborn Church of Christ and Lyons Pleasant Grove congregations remember her.
A 5 year old boy in Anaconda Montana outdid police and fire crews when a kitten stranded on a 20 foot high tension pole was saved after the boy called to it. The child's simple plea Kitty, J kitty brought the terrified cat down to safety.
