Indianapolis February 15 Forty law years in the Indiana legislature have conceived 208 new laws for Indiana. This outstrips all other members combined, though leaders offer no clear forecast for the session now more than half over. In the first month 451 bills were introduced in the two houses. Twenty four law years in the house submitted 111 and sixteen lawyers in the senate offered 97 more. Four senators and as many representatives are listed as having other vocations, proposing 24 new laws. The rise in lawyer leadership is blamed on professional familiarity with legal defects.
Indianapolis Feb 15 A senate bill by Senator Miles Furnas and Alfred Houston would cap candidate outreach in primaries to a letter to voters under 200 words and a 2 by 4 inch card. No newspaper or other printed campaign materials would be allowed with penalties up to 5000 dollars and possible 2 to 14 years imprisonment.
Debs remarks suggest the president, in denying a pardon, acted on his wishes. The Charleston News and Courier reports that the president’s refusal reflects a unanimous stance judged by Debs.
Myrtle Hensley, condemned for Leo Cousino’s murder, died after falling from a two story roof while escaping custody in Toledo. She had been sentenced to Marysville reformatory but retrial motion delayed. She climbed to the roof using a blanket rope and slipped. During trial she said she killed to protect her daughter Hilda Shinback.
Chicago Feb 15 The Erie railroad wage reductions for maintenance of way workers and changes in train dispatchers hours were suspended by the federal railroad board awaiting a February 23 hearing. No wage changes can take effect without agreements until the board rules. Representatives claim track workers were cut to 30 cents an hour from 3 to 4 5 cents, and dispatchers were ordered to seven days a week after six.
Springfield Mass. Mrs M Natale 72 Fremont St describes illness, pregnancy risk, and recovery after using Lydia E Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound. Husband urged trial. four months of limited work and fatigue improved, last birth easiest of eight. Says it transformed her home and recommends the remedy to others.
Washington reported that Max Wagman of Detroit filed a petition for review of his conviction under the Reed bone-dry act. Wagman argues the act is unconstitutional as a rider to the post office appropriation act of 1918 and that its title fails to state its objects and purposes, despite the supreme court already upholding the statute.
