Break in Marathon Cold Wave Spreads Across East

The fourth freeze of winter hits northern Florida with snow while the West, Great Lakes and Northeast see fresh snows. A warming trend began in the eastern two thirds as southern winds lift temperatures up to 20 degrees in parts of the Mississippi Valley. Rail Firm Seeks Closed Station at Regent Mine

A petition to abandon a car load freight station at the Regent mine near Linton has been filed with the Public Service Commission of Indiana by the Pennsylvania Railroad company. The filing notes the mine has been closed since June 4, 1955.

The Defense Department says the United States helped Britain develop a new ballistic rocket with underground launch capability. Terre Haute Murder Trial Delayed to March 24

The first degree murder trial of Thomas Whitaker a 37 year old Terre Haute man is rescheduled for March 24 in Vigo Circuit Court. The case involves the June 25 death of Whitaker s 9 year old daughter Regina and related alleged killings in a wife swap incident.

Private Enterprise Rescues 33 Snowbound Families

In South Bend Indiana a private enterprise stepped in after the county failed to rescue 33 people stranded by heavy snow since Sunday. Eight families were cut off, plows and graders could not clear 6 to 6 foot drifts, so a 16 ton bulldozer was used to clear a half mile path to a main road. Charles Campbell led the effort as the community sought to return children to school and workers to their jobs. Campbell’s son Jon delivered food Wednesday to the snowbound group on a toboggan.

Burglars Loot Two Jasonville Businesses in One Night

Porchlight Drive Set in Jasonville For Polio Fund

A one hour porchlight drive to benefit the 1958 March of Dimes National Polio Foundation will run from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Jasonville.
