The body of Pope Pius XI was placed in a triple coffin and laid to rest below St. Peter's Basilica in solemn rites. High dignitaries and papal relatives stood near the coffin as bells tolled and Gregorian chants filled the crypt. Cardinal Pacelli led the cardinals with a white miter and black cape in attendance.
Bradley Ray a Democrat of Beechcreek township was appointed to the Greene County Council to fill the vacancy caused by W E Dobbs death. The council then comprised seven members all Democrats with Frank Justus Jr the sole Republican office holder. Ray was sworn in at once and the meeting proceeded with no other nominations. The council roster includes Clarence Keller Joseph Megner Willard Humphreys Francis Haseman Garrett Daubenspeck Lilburn Jackson and Bradley Ray.
Harry Antibus, 74, of 110 First Street Southwest, sustained fractures to both bones of his right leg after stepping from a running board into a hole in the street. He received care at Freeman-Greene County Hospital and was returned home in satisfactory condition.
Billy Frank Nelson won a book prize after reading 91 books last summer. The prize was a single volume awarded to the student in Moberly Missouri.
Washington announces that Justice Louis Brandeis retires effective immediately at age 82 under the retirement act. President Roosevelt may appoint a westerner to fill Brandeis's seat as the 4th court vacancy of his presidency while Brandeis attends his final bench appearance.
Rev. S. FE. Decker former pastor of the Linton United Brethren church now a chaplain in the U S Army has been transferred to Panama and will sail with his family in June. Decker and his wife and son will accompany him to the new post in Panama. They are currently stationed at Langley Field Virginia.
Marjorie Bland of Solsberry route 1 was taken to her home this morning. Harry Antibus of this city received treatment this morning and was then dismissed from the hospital.
The Twin Safety chapter will hold its regular monthly meeting at 6:30 PM Wednesday in the Red Men’s hall. Attendees will discuss accidents and hear a report on a moving picture showing planned for the near future.
George B. Rogers 54 formerly of Linton died in South Bend after a yearlong illness. Survived by widow two sisters Mrs Hagaman and Mrs Roy Winters of Towell Butte Oregon and brother Roy Rogers Arcade New York. Body to be returned to Linton for funeral either there or in Elnora with burial likely in Elnora.
Police Sgt. George W. Van Ness and his son along with Grand Angell reported spotting a pure white deer while hunting near Hornell New York. They could not determine the gender from their distance.
In line with Chancery guidance, all Catholic churches in the Indianapolis diocese will mark Pope Pius XI's death with memorial services on Wednesday morning. Requiem High Mass will be held at St. Peters church in Linton at a set time, followed by solemn absolution over the catafalque. Attendance is open to all citizens of Linton regardless of faith.
The Linton Frank Courtney American Legion post rifle team beat Mt Carmel Rifle Club by 28 points at the local range. Scorers for Linton were Blanton 192 Page 188 Frederick 187 Taylor 183 and Tislow 183 for a team total 953 while Mt Carmel shooters Rinike 185 Stein 184 Garrett 181 Winkler 180 and Allen 175 totaled 905.
Police questioned an unidentified Indianapolis man who allegedly handed over jewelry taken from Mrs. Selah Carrie Romig after a hammer murder on January 17. Detectives, aided by ex-convict suspect William Ray Butsch, seized the man at his home and pursued the stolen- goods trail.
Edward E. Robert 62, longtime proprietor of the Robert Monument Works in Dugger, died after a brief illness. Born in Chicago, he lived in Indiana for years and worked for Hodges Monument in Linton. Survived by wife Mary, two sons Leonard and Floyd, daughter Lillian, a brother Anno Robert and sister Mrs Henry Chaltin, and three grandchildren. Funeral at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Dugger Baptist Church, Rev. Simpson officiating. burial in Dugger Cemetery. Burial details arranged by M. J. Aikin & Son Funeral Home.
Former Police Commissioner James S. Bolan testified that Tamany district leader had nothing to do with the transfer of Patrolman Joseph Terminello. The state tied the transfer to alleged payoffs to the ring, while defense counsel presented Maher records to argue the detective’s shifts were unrelated to the Terminello transfer.
Alpha Comer a 35 year old Brazil coal miner was sentenced to six months in Indiana State Prison and fined 5 dollars for assault and battery Judge John Baumunk said Comer admitted guilt and said he enticed two women into a car and struck them with a revolver both Bigamy charges were dismissed after Comer claimed he paid lawyers in St Louis for a divorce from his first wife
Indiana lawmakers consider forming a three member state labor relations board with governor appointments and Senate approval to oversee disputes promote collective bargaining and supervise elections. Other actions include liquor control bills and medical testing requirements for healthcare professionals.
Dr. C. W. Messinger of Houghton Michigan described a method to remove an abscessed tooth, treat it and replant it. He has replanted about seventy five teeth with expected life of five to ten years. The procedure uses X rays, extraction, abscess treatment, sterilization and a gold split to hold the tooth as gums heal.
Earl Roach a 41 year old WPA worker from Avoca was found murdered near Springville Indiana. His throat was cut and his body dragged 40 feet to a hidden spot under bushes. Sheriff Dunbar indicated no weapon was found and relatives survive his wife and three children.
Mrs. Eliza Pigg Rhodes aged 80, lifelong Vicksburg resident, died at 6 15 this morning after a three month illness. Survived by husband Jacob Rhodes of Vicksburg, three sons Elmer, Everett, James, and daughter Mrs. Clara Hubbell, plus 20 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Funeral at Summerville Church Thursday at 2 pm with Rev. Paul Neal officiating. burial Antioch Cemetery. Welch and Cornett funeral home in charge.
Citizens are urged to help park squirrels in Linton as the 20 resident bush tailed creatures suffer nut shortage. Donations of any edible nuts can be dropped at the Linton Fire Department headquarters.
