More than two inches of rain drenched Linton and surrounding areas, with 2.09 inches at Elliston and an additional 0.95 inches the prior week. Basements flooded and sewers backed up, while rivers and streams rose in Indiana prompting cautions for motorists as forecasts call for more rain and colder weather.
Sen Walter F George of Georgia called for a six billion dollar cut in President Truman’s budget to keep the U S economy steady. He suggested substantial savings in foreign aid and stressed a sound domestic economy as the first line of defense.
The Northeast Ward Parent Teachers Association meeting set for this evening is postponed one week. Members are asked to meet next Monday at the Northeast Ward location.

Wesley Moses Roberts 70 of Owensburg dies at 4:00 am in his home. A Spanish American War veteran and farmer, he leaves a widow Bertha and seven daughters plus three sons. Funeral at Owensburg Baptist Church Tuesday at 2 PM with burial in Owensburg Cemetery.
Secretary Oscar L. Chapman announced the Bureau of Mines will investigate every fatality in the nation’s coal mines. The aim is to learn facts, determine causes, and recommend safeguards to prevent repeats, expanding beyond past focus on disasters with five or more deaths.
A weekly Treasure Chest program sponsored by Linton merchants and businessmen begins March 1. Residents pick up entry cards from participating shops, and each Wednesday at 2 30PM a winner selects a key to open one of five boxes containing 10 20 30 40 or 50 percent of the Chest. The program starts with a $200 Chest and may grow weekly with new merchandise specials offered by local merchants.
Edwin H. Hughes 83 longtime Methodist bishop and former DePauw president died in Washington after a two week pneumonia illness. He had served as a church leader and university administrator.

Mr and Mrs Clarence Gillett of Linton receive a cablegram announcing the birth of a daughter to Lt and Mrs Gordon R Griffith in Coburg Germany where they have served with the U S Army for two years. This is the third child. Mrs Griffith was formerly Miss Mary Fay Gillett of Linton.
Six people were injured in two crashes on state road 54 four miles east of Linton around 4 30 Sunday afternoon. Cars driven by Paul W Strietelmeier and O L Kautz collided after a passing attempt. Mrs Aerie Kautz suffered facial cuts. In the second crash Napoleon V West and David H Thornberrys autos collided, injuring several occupants as fire damaged the Vest vehicle. Strietelmeier was fined for speeding.
William Dudley Pelley former Silver Shirt leader to be released from the Federal penitentiary in Terre Haute tomorrow after a four parole grant. He faced potential extradition to Asheville North Carolina to answer charges tied to violating a suspended 1935 sentence. Warden J Ellis Overlade said Pelley suffered a nervous reaction but is nearly recovered despite a minor heart ailment.
United Mine Workers ignored a federal injunction ordering a return to work. Major pits nationwide stayed idle as miners marked John L. Lewis's birthday with a boycott. Officials hoped for a back-to-work move within days. wage demands and Kentucky agreements fueled the dispute.
Bill Slinkard of Linton recalls a birthday gift from Australia as his son Herman now in Sydney calls him at 5:00 am local time. A wire recording of the conversation was made here. The elder Slinkard plans to leave for California soon and may visit Australia to see his son.
