Mayor William Hudnut and Police Chief Eugene Gallagher unveiled eight two man walking patrols for downtown Indianapolis. The two man teams will be assigned to walking beats in the heart of the city to curb violent crime and support the area revitalization effort.
A Tippecanoe County grand jury returned 16 indictments, raising total to 32 in a continuing inquiry into corrupt government practices. Officials say more indictments are expected as the probe, begun about six weeks ago, continues. four of the original 16 remain at large and most others are free on bond. Names of the latest indictments were not released pending arrests.
Prosecutor Michael Kearns said he would reveal the Vigo County grand jury’s probe areas shortly. Indications point to possible irregularities in the public domain as three Terre Haute firemen testified, including Virgil Allen who runs a fire safety equipment firm, with Don Anderson and Nick Peters among others.
The National Weather Service forecasts dry weather through the weekend with only a 20 to 40 percent chance of light showers Friday afternoon in southern Indiana. Temperatures rise from the 20s and 30s this morning into the 40s and 50s this afternoon, a similar range projected for Friday.

City of Linton negotiators and most municipal employees advance toward a contract with union representation under IBEW. The talks cover job security classifications bidding procedures and management rights, with retroactive pay proposed once a contract is reached within 60 days.
Greene County Soil and Water Conservation District holds its annual meeting and free fish fry on Tuesday February 17 at Eastern High School. Max Carrico chairs the event with speaker Carter Everage on Conservation and Common Sense. A new supervisor will be elected and district activities reviewed.
Greene County World Hunger committee with Linton First Church of God and Project Partner organize a March 13 to 20 relief trip to Guatemala for food medicine and supplies. Rev. John Catchem leads the team planning corn gleaning for funds and asks volunteers and donors to aid with flights costs around 350 per person and supplies for Teccpan and Patzun villages.
