Voters in Union Township Fulton County approve a 74 cent per 100 tax hike. The referendum passed 531 to 234, about 82.2 percent of the 930 registered voters, funding the effort to restore the high school's accreditation after it was decommissioned for not meeting state standards.
Kelly and Mary Day filed a suit near Lafayette against Eli Lilly & Co and Blanco Products Co seeking 35 million dollars. They allege the herbicide Surflan caused substantial crop damage and soil residue, with crops showing nutritional deficiencies, erratic growth and root damage on their Buck Creek area farm.
Raymond C. Hockersmith Jr., 43, of Muncie was arrested Tuesday on assault charges against an Internal Revenue Service officer. He was released on a $5,000 personal assurance bond by Federal Magistrate Thomas J. Faulconer. The incident followed an alleged hit to revenue officer Geronimo Garza in the head at the Muncie IRS office last Thursday. In another Indiana report, a Hendricks County REMC lineman with 15 years on the job was critically burned Tuesday while restoring power after last week’s ice storm. Lloyd Hadley, 51, of Danville, brushed a 7,200-volt line at New Winchester west of Danville and was helped from the pole by two co workers.
The House Judiciary Committee rejected a nationwide handgun ban. By 25 to 8 vote the panel killed Rep. John Conyers proposed amendment allowing police and certified pistol clubs to keep handguns, with owners to surrender others for fair market value.
Indiana's short legislative session has spent most days in political maneuvering over bills. Of 927 introduced this session, 127 have passed both houses. Leaders in both chambers block bills by withholding committee assignments, prompting calls to limit power and remove obstructive leaders.
The Linton city council limited parking to one side on sections of F Street Northeast Seventh Street Southeast and Eighth Street Southeast after resident complaints and safety concerns. Terre Haute clergyman and journalist Jon Pekel announces as a Democratic candidate to challenge incumbent Republican John Myers in Indiana's 7th district. Pekel emphasizes voting for the people and bringing federal government closer to Hoosiers, noting Myers has supported national votes over Indiana interests. He is a former Trinity Lutheran pastor and Spectator columnist, on leave from the Indiana Kentucky Synod, with TV work in Terre Haute.
Linton Bicentennial Committee develops a partial calendar of events and calls for community input. City chairman Don Keller invites residents to a February 26 meeting to discuss plans including church sings, youth recognition, Past Present Future Day, Senior Citizens Day, a clothing parade and beard contest, square dancing, and a Fourth of July parade with joint worship services.
United Mine Workers President Arnold Miller spoke at a Indianapolis news conference urging passage of Indiana legislation to upgrade surface mine safety. He noted old laws lack state inspections, leaving about 3 000 surface miners unprotected while surface mine fatalities rise nationally and in the state.
