Local history notes tell of Mrs. Strong losing her life while traveling to Memphis to visit her wounded husband during the Civil War. She perished when the Sultana exploded after a boiler fire, a disaster that cost about 1450 lives near Memphis on April 27, 1865. Nearby resident Vance Swaggerty survived the wreck but was left crippled.
Interested residents invited to a Friday night .22 caliber rifle shoot at the recreation hall in the K of P building on West Vincennes Street. Bring your rifle or purchase cartridges if needed. Afterward plans were made to organize adult and junior clubs to compete with other groups. Sponsored by the Greene County WUPLAL Recreation Department.
A trio of gas main blasts devastated a south Philadelphia Italian area, killing at least five and sending about 40 to hospitals. Patrolman James Clark died while assisting survivors. Three bodies were recovered as fires raged after the second and third explosions.
A blaze at the Blackhawk mine, fourteen miles south of Terre Haute Indiana, caused 150000 to 200000 dollars in damage to the tipple and coal washing plant. About 500 workers on the night shift escaped unharmed as crews fought the fire and residents aided efforts to prevent spread. The fire started in top tipple sheave wheels and the plant had been recently installed. The mine is four miles south of Riley on State Road 159.
Impeachment proceedings against I Grant Beesley Vincennes township trustee moved forward after affidavits by six taxpayers filed in superior court. Beesley faces grand jury indictment for alleged irregularities in poor relief admin and a state board of accounts audit showing a $13000 township shortfall. Affidavits allege improper relief, payments to Dr Paul Arbogast and Chris Kotter, unauthorized township expenditures and personal gasoline charges.
A daughter weighing seven pounds and fourteen ounces was born to Mrs Elsie Layman of Swity City this morning. The baby has been named Saundra Sue. Mrs Wayne Waterman and baby were taken home to Worthington Monday afternoon.
Indiana legislature approved three major Republican program measures including the keystone government reorganization act and a Republican controlled highway commission. Gov Schricker expected to veto. supporters vowed to re pass after veto. Representatives Dausman and Baxter opposed immediate approval citing rush. Baxter backed Democrats on both measures. Dausman supported the highway bill but abstained on the big measure.
United States Bureau of Mines awarded First Aid certificates to a class of twenty men after an exam at the Linton Public Library. The Indiana State Teachers College vocational department also issued certificates. Instructors William Brown and Frank Parsons have taught for six years. Brown received a permanent instructor diploma, Parsons the third from the Bureau.
Members of the Linton Frank Courtney American Legion post will cooperate with the national defense registration program by filling out forms starting Saturday February 22. The national registration was authorized at the 1940 convention and will collect identification, military status, and vocational information. Commander Alex McPhail urged all post members to participate by completing a registration form.
Friends of Walter G. Krivitsky claim he was murdered by a Soviet GPU agent and urge FBI involvement. Krivitsky was found with a bullet to the head in a Washington hotel, with relatives and his attorney arguing for an assassination theory tied to GPU history and Trotsky cases.
An unusually successful benefit basketball doubleheader at Switz City high gym drew funds for the Greene County Infantile Paralysis fund. Lyons Ambassadors beat Switz City Independents 52 to 23, with a first half 25 to 11 run. Switz City High School II defeated Freedom High School Reserves 22 to 6. Donations totaled 37.50 from Mrs. Charles B Hollars and 5.35 from a cake sale run by Arion Club members.
Linton firemen made a repeat call about 4:00 PM Monday to the Roy Jarman home at Fourth and H streets northeast. Earlier, around 1:30 PM Sunday, a roof blaze at the same house was extinguished, but sparks rekindled the roof and caused a second fire with little damage.
Alf Landon charged that major industrial organizations use a dog in the manger attitude hindering national defense. He said large factories lag in production and refuse to outsource contracts to smaller firms, which could speed up outputs.
United States Minister George Earle protested to Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ivan Popoff after police in Plovdiv seized a diplomatic passport belonging to American courier Raymond J. Leddy en route to Istanbul. Leddy continued to Turkey without the passport. UKIAH floods isolate mentally ill patients at Mendocino State Hospital as guards tighten measures and fear food shortages if the Russian River and Mill Creek floodwaters persist.
Four Greene County area one men, including Wright Stockton and Stafford townships, will report February 28 for selective service induction. Three replacements from Linton replace failed inductees at Fort Harrison. Officials expect 28 men from area 1 to be called between March 2 and April 10, with volunteers already inducted or awaiting calls.
Baxter Paine 37 of Jasonville and William Archer of Farmersburg were injured in a head-on collision on the Youngstown curve on U S Highway 41 about eight miles south of Terre Haute. Paine suffered head and shoulder cuts and bruises while Archer had leg injuries. Police say Archer was southbound and Paine northbound. both cars were heavily damaged.

RAF launches a 24 hour offensive targeting Germany and Italy with warships joining in. Bombardments hit the Flanders coast and northern Italy including Sicily and near Naples and Brindisi. London notes concern over a new German strike as Balkans and Spain rumor mill swirl.
Linton-Stockton battles Jasonville Yellow Jackets at the Linton gym aiming to avenge a 35-34 Dec 10 loss. Jasonville arrives with a 10-5 record led by Craig Gallion and Billinsley. Linton lists Moehlmann Bach Steele Lewis or Arthur Laughlin or Gilmour as starters. reserves also boast strong records. games start at 7:00 with the main event at 8:00.
Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia urged approval of the British aid bill as essential to American interests while President James B. Conant of Harvard supported U S warning of war with the axis if needed. Both testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on the administration's British aid measure.
Orval D. Hunter judge of Greene circuit court announced the appointment of Mrs Walter Sapp of Bloomfield to the Greene county board of public welfare. She succeeds Mrs Wayne Secrest who resigned and joins Walter Wakefield Vilas Trinkle John Smith and Mrs C M Chambers on the board.
Two Linton banks the Peoples Trust Company and the Citizens National Bank will be closed all day Wednesday in observance of the Lincoln birthday anniversary, an announcement said.
