Virginia Schools Admit Nine Negroes To Classes Today
In Alexandria Virginia nine African American children were admitted to three public schools. Seven joined two elementary schools as the first integration there and two entered a previously all white high school near Mount Vernon. Police guarded the schools as city officials complied with a court order amid limited demonstrations and ongoing integration efforts.

22 Dead In St Louis Tornado Strike
A sleeper tornado with 110 mph winds hit St Louis early today, killing 22 people and injuring more than 320. Hospitals treated 270 and kept 55, as two transmitting towers were downed and a Negro neighborhood area suffered extensive damage. Police reported minimal looting and rescue teams worked by spotlights.

Dr. Carl H. Burrell, a Jasonville dentist for over five decades, died Monday in Santa Ana California at age 77. Born July 1881 in Odon, he practiced in Loogootee before moving to Jasonville in 1906. He led Greene County Dental Society and served on Indiana Dental Assistants advisory panel, with sister Mrs. Nellie O'Dell in California as survivor. Funeral plans are pending arrival of the body in Jasonville.
