Jo si ah Kirby Lilly board chairman of Eli Lilly & Co. died in Indianapolis at 86. Lilly was famed for easing human suffering through medicine.
In Mt Pleasant Michigan a cooking stove explosion and a broken gas main leveled a six room house. The Wohlsheid family mother 27 and five children aged 2 to 10 died. Father Roy Wohlsheid 35 survived in critical condition at Mt Clemens Hospital after neighbors and firefighters battled zero temperature flames.

David Whitaker of Scotland underwent major surgery today. Floyd Booker of Jasonville had an appendectomy this morning. Dismissals include Mrs. Roy Mason of Linton, Mrs. Edith Baker and baby of Newberry, Denene Fisher of Linton. Mrs. Dorothy Stevens transferred to a nursing home in Bedford. Shelby Jean Clark of Linton Eliza Ramsey of Bloomfield Danny Stropes of Linton Miss Marie Rogerson taken to her mother’s home in Jasonville.
A thief broke into the Lace Bar in West Vincennes early Sunday, pried a tin section from a storage room, forced a window and broke a basement door. Marion Lynn said only five or six quarts of whiskey were taken. Police continued investigations.
Stockton township trustee Robert C. McFadden announced the completion of audiometer screening in township elementary schools. Harry Fiscus, Greene county attendance officer, oversaw the tests funded by the Greene County Board of Education. In Cornwall near Helston a fox hunt ended in tragedy when 15 prize hounds valued at about 4000 dollars vanished into an old water filled shaft during a pursuit. Hunt secretary Mrs. R. Sturgess called the loss crippling while W Benny rescued one dog and barely survived.
Federal and state mine inspectors probed the Sunshine coal mine near Greenwood Arkansas after a Sunday explosion killed eight men. The dead included three Grile brothers and foreman Joe Williams all from Hackett and other workers Matt Denne John Winters Earl Fish from Hackett Ralph Morelock of Bonanza. Rescue teams found all bodies after five hours as after damp gas caused suffocation and concussion injuries.
A new mid winter cold wave hits Elliston with morning readings at five degrees. The prior two days lows were 10 degrees and 16 degrees respectively. By 11 am the temperature rose to 20 degrees and forecasts call for warmer weather by Tuesday.

Mrs. Fred Pepper of Fort Wayne Indiana trapped the index finger on her right hand inside a wax can. Two policemen used cutting tools to cut a circle around the finger and pry it loose.

Dora A Smith 64 of Dugger died at 4:20 Sunday at home after a year long illness. Born April 23 1883 in Sullivan County to Charles and Emma Moody she was a Dugger Methodist Church member. Survived by husband Wilbert Smith daughter Mary Shoptow of Linton four granddaughters one great granddaughter one sister Verna Moody and four stepdaughters. Funeral 10:30 Tuesday at Mt Moriah Church with Rev. Suddarth. Burial Mt Moriah Cemetery.
Funeral services were held at Newark Sunday afternoon for Mrs. Emma Lou Bingham 78 who died Friday at the home of her daughter Verna Smith in Quincy. A Greene county resident for 55 years she leaves five daughters two sons two brothers and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Interment followed at Newark cemetery with Macy Funeral Home of Spencer in charge.
Mayor Arthur M. Grass and the Police Department asked Linton residents to clear snow and ice from sidewalks. They acknowledged frozen sidewalks complicate street cleaning and urged quick action to prevent further slips, noting an ordinance governs sidewalk maintenance.
Linda Jo Elliott daughter of Mr and Mrs John Elliott has been sent home from Riley hospital in Indianapolis where she had been confined. Her condition remains serious and she is reported in fragile health.

The Linton Civic Garden club reschedules its Valentine party from tonight at 7:30 to 7:30 p m Monday February 16 due to the death of Mrs Wayne Hamilton. The event will be hosted by Mrs Earl T Aikin.
