Johnson Calls Security Council Into Session

President Johnson convened the National Security Council and congressional leaders to discuss the Viet Nam crisis. The meeting followed a second joint American-South Viet Nam air attack on North Viet Nam and aimed to hear a briefing from McGeorge Bundy on the situation.

Reapportionment Plan Introduced in Indiana Senate

State Sen. Marlin McDaniel introduced a reapportionment measure claiming it nears statistical perfection. The plan allocates seven Indianapolis Marion County seats plus a Johnson County joint seat, with Lake County receiving five seats plus a Porter-Newton joint seat. Bodies Pulled From White River and Ohio River

Muncie police seek to identify a 50-year-old man found in White River while New Albany officials report a death by own action of a man in the Ohio River. The body in Muncie wore shabby clothes with a rosary. no ID. In Jeffersonville, 45-year-old Harry Earl Gatz Jr. was ruled to have died by his own action, after a note was found in his billfold and his car on a bridge.

Two Accidents Reported In Greene County Sunday

Greene County Sheriff's Department reported two Sunday accidents. At 3 am a tractor trailer driven by Arthur L. Stricklin overturned on Hwy 67 near Switz City, causing about 2500 dollars in damage. no injuries or tickets. At 10 am a pickup driven by Bobby G. Eavey collided with Hilda Mitten’s car on old Terre Haute Road near Worthington, causing 300 dollars to the pickup and 600 to the car. no injuries or tickets.

Boy Presented Medal For Saving Lives

SOUTH BEND Ind wrr Fire Chief Cecil McHenry was to present a medal to a 10 year old for bravery in saving his four brothers and sisters from a house fire. Courtney Steele herded three to safety then climbed to a second story window to rescue his baby sister Friday night. Neighbors were unable to help because of smoke and flames. Medal given on behalf of the South Bend Firemen's Association.

Air Strike Aims to Discourage North Viet Nam Infiltrators

The United States carried a carrier based air strike against North Viet Nam aimed at curbing the influx of Communist infiltrators into the south. Defense Secretary McNamara cited estimates up to 10,000 infiltrators last year and said future action hinges on halting cross border movement via areas like Dong Hoi and trails through Laos to central and southern Viet Nam. The White House noted Hanoi used these routes to train guerrillas, with a recent mortar attack on a U S barracks and airfield cited as linked to these movements.

Midland Man Hurt In Farm Accident

Walter F. Stockrahm about 67 of Midland was injured in a farm fall in a field behind a barn west of Highway 59. He was taken to Freeman-Greene County hospital with a leg injury and head lacerations after his wife heard his cries and Greene County Rescue Unit responded. The full extent of injuries was not known at press time.

Second Aircraft Strikes North Viet Nam Hit Vinh Linh Base

North Vietnamese targets were pounded for the second day by South Vietnamese and American aircraft. General Khanh reported 70 percent of objectives destroyed at Vinh Linh with 24 Skyraider bombers and supporting jets, one Skyraider shot down but the pilot safe. Dong Hoi and the 17th Parallel area were also involved with U S retaliation after a Viet Cong raid killed eight Americans and wounded 126.

Red Raiders Hit Copter Base Eight Americans Dead

Communists attacked the Pleiku U S helicopter base at 2 a.m. killing eight Americans and wounding 126. They destroyed or damaged more than 25 aircraft as guards were absent. Bundy and Gen Khanh visited the scene after the assault.

Soviets Warn U S Against Raids

Moscow warns that U S bombing strikes on North Vietnam could have serious consequences. Izvestia branding the raids barbaric and an aggression. Embassy prepares for protests as China warns against widening the war. Pravda calls the raids a razing provocation.

The remarks appeared aimed at a global audience more than the immediate gathering.
