Linton Jasonville and Lyons sent boys to the armed services today per the Selective Service office. Leaving were Gene Friedman Lloyd L Ferguson Bobby L Earl Josephus Thomas Jr all of Linton James R Stamm of Lyons and Jacob Passen of Jasonville Ferris Pope has enlisted in the army through the recruiting office.
About 200 people are expected at the Linton high school Appreciation banquet honoring the Wabash Valley 1946 champions, with 15 hostesses named. The menu includes escalloped chicken and cake. Tickets are on sale at the high school and Ladson's Sporting Goods Store until noon Sunday.
Washington February 8 UP President Truman denied executive clemency for Japanese Gen. Tomoyuki Yamashita. The War Department said the White House approval reached Gen. Douglas Mac Arthur who had ordered Yamashita executed. MacArthur had directed the Tiger of Malaya to be hanged after being stripped of rank.
Two Army fliers were killed when an AT-6F training plane crashed and burned near Chicago. The two officers, a captain and a lieutenant, were from the 4200th base unit at the airport and had just taken off about an hour earlier. Cause of the crash is unknown.
Washington report lists representatives who voted on the labor bill. Republican names include Gillie Grant Halleck Harness Johnson Landis Springer from Indiana. Republicans voting against include Howell Lafollette from Indiana. Democrats listed as for: none.

Washington Feb 8 President Truman canceled plans to leave Monday for a two week cruise along the Florida coast citing the immediate critical situation at hand. He faces a national strike and other emergency problems prompting the decision.
Twenty five planeloads of Americans have left for Europe to observe the Greek national elections on March 31. Special Ambassador Henry F Grady will lead the final watch from Washington before Greece. Observers including over 600 military and civilian personnel are billeted at Naples and trained by the U S army for a fair vote. Grady, resting in California, returns for talks with President Truman and Secretary Byrnes before Greece. James Grafton Rogers accompanies Grady as a control chief with temporary ministerial rank.
A marriage license was issued by the Sullivan circuit court clerk to Norman Tincher of Lyons U S Marine Corps and Jeanette Bedwell of Lyons.
Nancy Jane Buckner 89 longtime Greene county resident died Wednesday at home after years of ill health. Born January 3, 1857 in Highland township she was daughter of William and Mary Hodges. Survived by son Charles Wesley Buckner of Worthington and daughter Bettie Parham of Danville. Funeral at First Baptist church Worthington Sunday at 2 pm with burial in Worthington cemetery.
Charleston Newfoundland reporter states Paul Turner Sargent a widely known artist died of a heart attack on his farm near Charleston at age 65. He had permanent exhibits at the Hoosier Salon in Indianapolis the Swope Art Gallery in Terre Haute and at the University of Indiana. His latest exhibit featured Indiana Brown County landscapes recently hung at the Brown County Art Gallery.
Members of the Mu Beta Gamma Circle of the First Baptist church plan a regular meeting at 7:30 PM Monday at the home of Mrs. Max Cravens, 589 F Street Northeast.
Glenburn community youths plan a skating room beside the former Glenburn school building now occupied by Glenburn-Miller Industry. Miss Nora D. Yoder says the space will be open to all youths under Christian guidelines, with 20 cent blocks sold for a cornerstone inscription and gifts welcomed for the project.
Mrs Helen OBrien received word of the death of Charles W Standley 49 of Washington at Hillcrest sanitarium Thursday morning. He was brother in law of Mr OBrien and cousin of Stanley Hastings of Linton. Funeral services are set for Saturday at 10 30 am in Poindexter Chapel Washington with interment at Walnut Hill Cemetery.
Oolitic and Bicknell Cone Electric face off tonight at 8 in Linton gym for the tri-county independent net title. Owens leads scoring with 25 as Oolitic and Bicknell edged past Ladson’s All Stars and Sandborn to reach the final. a trophy will be awarded by the Junior Chamber of Commerce with proceeds funding a new electric scoreboard for the football field.

Albert Truitt dismissed. Mrs Ben Franklin and Mrs William Gholson also home. Mrs Ray Kendall and baby released to Worthington home.
Mayor W B Carlton announced the Linton city council will meet at 7 30 tonight in the council chambers. The February meeting date was changed for this month only, he said.

Mrs. Mary E. Cooksey aged 85 died Thursday at 5 30 pm at her son Victor Cooksey’s home six miles northeast of Linton. Born June 23 1860 in Grant township she was the widow of John A Cooksey. Surviving are one son five grandchildren and four great grandchildren with four other children deceased. Funeral services are set for 2 pm Saturday at the Nine Mile Methodist church with Rev Underwood officiating, Welch and Cornett in charge. Burial will follow.
All offices in Bloomfield county courthouse will be closed all day Tuesday February 12 in observance of Lincoln's birthday. The notice says operations will resume as normal the following morning.
