Tokyo reports United Nations forces drive toward Seoul as American Turkish and Puerto Rican infantry push to within six miles of the city. Tanks raid Anyang area while Chinese and North Korean reinforcements flood the front.
Linton police report Bert Sills a well known local resident and member of the police department is badly in need of a new bed mattress and bed clothing. Donations of bed springs or other bedding will be arranged for installation at his home via police contact telephone number 75.
The College Hill Parents Association will hold its regular meeting in the school building Thursday evening at 7 o clock. Members are asked to bring sandwiches. An entertainment is being planned.
In Union Station melee between MPs and paratroopers from Ft. Campbell three others were hurt. Cpl Edford Keeton of Nauvoo Alabama said he fired in self defense, killing Cpl Robert McKenna 19 from Stoneham Massachusetts after McKenna and pals ganged him. The incident followed arrests for drunk and disorderly conduct as about 60 paratroopers failed to board trains.
On the Korean front Lt. Carl H. Dodd and Sgt. Herman H. Flath lead American and South Korean troops against Chinese forces on a hill. The unit held positions through a cold night, using grenades to press the assault and prepare for dawn.
Labor's leaders fear that unionism as usual is dead while wage freezes press prices down and workers seek policy power. They cite Charles E. Wilson's defense team balance, lack of labor policy clout, and the absence of a Hillman-like figure to steer White House and defense policy.
In Columbus Indiana on February 7 to 10 residents of Hope were without water for a third day due to a leak in the water system. Schools remained closed because of the water failure.
Maude Skomp died at her Newberry home at two this morning after a brief illness. Born October 7 1884 in Hardin County Ohio to James and Lilly Thompson, she was a member of Mt. Nebo Evangelical United Brethren Church and active in the congregation. Survived by husband Robert Roy Skomp ten children twenty five grandchildren two brothers and one sister the body sent to Jenkins Funeral Home Bloomfield for arrangements.
Services will be held tomorrow for Edward Short 78 who died after a fall from a second story window at his Peru Indiana home yesterday Coroner Owen B Johnson said Short apparently suffered a heart attack while at the window.
The Linton Moose Lodge will hold initiation in the hall here Thursday evening at 7 30 oclock. Officers urge all members to be present. A fish fry will be held following the lodge meeting.
In Indianapolis on February 7, Senator Judson H. West proposes an amendment to widen public access to welfare records. The measure would publish recipient names and payments in county offices and the welfare department. Supporters argue secrecy hides program costs in better times.
Archie P. Harmeson of Indianapolis was sentenced to six years for engineering a $50 000 check theft and forgery ring. Federal Judge William E. Steckler also sentenced Thomas S. Gray of Allentown Pennsylvania to one year and a day for influencing his wife to steal and forge a government check. Several others in the ring face hearings or have been sentenced previously.
The Civic Garden club will meet Monday afternoon at 2 00 at Mrs Earl T A Aikin's home. State and district officers will attend and members are asked to bring African violets for display.
Indiana House labor committee advances a measure to raise weekly unemployment benefits from 20 to 27 dollars while keeping the 20 week maximum. A separate Senate amendment seeks to expand welfare rolls openness to the public. Also noted are budget cuts to geology and military and agricultural groups, plus civil defense stockpile funding and a soldiers bonus concession for conscientious objectors.
Kenneth L. Robbins 30 of Frankfort began a one year federal sentence for extorting more than 300 dollars from a male friend by writing love letters signed with a fictitious girl's name. He claimed it was a joke and only got 150 dollars. Robbins sent letters to Charles Wallace from Terre Haute titled Betty Forgger asking loans and promising an inheritance.
