The Linton Free-Man-Greene county Hospital reports 57 births in January the highest monthly total ever for the hospital. In early February 13 babies were born, marking a strong start to the year as officials compare with July 1957's 55 births.
J. W Uncle Joe Suthard 91 died last Saturday in Central City Kentucky and was buried at Rose Hill Memorial Cemetery after services at Tucker Funeral Home He lived in Linton briefly around 1900 He was twin to the late John R Suthard of Linton and a former carpenter member of St Charles Christian church Odd Fellows He leaves a daughter Addie Hooks of Central City and many nieces nephews and cousins in Linton and Jasonville communities.
Jim Haseman and Jim Haussin, stationed with the U S Air Force in Denver Colp, are due in Linton this weekend after a 19 day furlough. Haseman reports to Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield Calif and Haussin to Richards Gebaur Air Force Base in Belton Mo. Haseman is the son of Mr and Mrs Joe Haseman of Linton and Haussin the son of Mr and Mrs Oscar Haussin of this community.
A British airliner carrying Manchester United players and staff crashed during takeoff in Munich in heavy snow. Initial reports say at least 26 dead with 12 survivors. The Elizabethan class plane carried 38 passengers and six crew, struck a building and exploded, igniting fires across several homes and nearby structures.
Indiana Traffic Safety Foundation cites 47 cities with no traffic deaths in 1957. Linton, noted for safety, also saw a fatal pedestrian incident by a visitor named Tobe Dixon after year’s start. Citations awarded across population groups include Bicknell, Bloomington, Richmond, and 20 other towns plus Linton in 5,000 to 10,000 bracket.
Three area women will join 39 nursing students at Union Hospital school in Terre Haute for cap ceremonies on February 7. Names listed are Jeanette Herndon Linda Jean Mitchell and Saran Stout daughters of local residents. All began training in August 1957.
Greene County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation committee announces final dates for corn loans and purchase agreements in the Angoumois moth area. Disbursements must occur by April 15 and no loans, purchase agreements, or disbursements will be accepted after these dates.
Former Agriculture Secretary Claude R. Wickard told the Indiana Farmers Union meeting that persistingly low farm purchasing power fuels unemployment. He warned continued price declines threaten farmer viability and consumer food quality, noting inflation harms all while low farm prices mask worse inflation and cost farmers billions.
Indianapolis detectives report Charles E. Krutz husband of 41 year old Malvina Krutz who was found dead in a bathtub will take a lie detector test. A similar test is planned for Charles Fleck a friend who said Krutz was at Fleck's apartment during a key hour on the day of the drowning.
The Bethel Womans' Society of Christian Service joined about one hundred attendees at the Sullivan county district workshop held at the Methodist church in Dugger. Special guests were Dr. and Mrs. A. M. Brown of Vincennes, with Bethel participants including Mesdames Lucy Coffey Adelle Smith Myrtle Underwood Dorothy Buck May Fainot Mabel Burris Mildred Hale and Ethel Cowden.

A 14 year old stabbed a monitor at Henry Hudson Junior High, and a George Washington High student suffered a brain concussion after a beating. Detectives arrested 19 year old Rupert Asby, linked to robberies at the Music and Arts High School, and a 19 year old male admitted robbing pupils for narcotics money.

Explorer satellite current in orbit guides defense officials as they seek launch sites suitable for north-south orbits. A Green County high school student Warren Flisram 16 found $13 485 in cash along a Chicago and North Western track after a train reportedly dropped a mail pouch. Postal authorities say only $15 is missing and the boy turned the money to Police Chief Donald Ferris and townspeople.

A Johnson Circuit Court jury acquitted Charles Tompkins, 22, Indianapolis bartender, in the 1956 shooting death of Thomas Cook, 22, also of Indianapolis. Judge Robert B. Lybrock ordered the direct verdict after ruling the state failed to prove premeditation. Tompkins contended the gun discharged accidentally during a brawl at the Cotton Club.
